-The top body of each form 'ofg-the invention includes a lowerbowl shaped section 14, an upperbowl shaped section 15, a hollow sheet metal stem 16, a spindle supporting member 17 preferably fastened between the lower section l l and the upper section 15, a cap 18, a spring actuated engagingpin 19,
and a spindle 20 upon which'the top is adapted to spin. The spindle, as shown, is secured in any desired manner to thecentral portion of the lower section, and theuppersection is provided with an annular flange portion 21 turned in and against the annular edge portion of the lower section to fasten the sec? tions to each other and to secure thezend portions of the stem support between the-edge of the lower section and the upper section; I

The support. 17 is provided with a depression 25 receiving the lower end of the stem 16, thebody of said stem passing vertically upwardly through holes in the top section of the body and of the cap 18. Numeral 26 represents an annular rib upon the stem in position to be en'- gaged by the under face of the top section, the stem in this manner evidently being rigidly supported within the upper portions of the top body and in the cap.
In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 8 and 4 the supporting member 17 is provided with a centrally arranged rib 27 provided with a concavity 25, and the lbwer end of the stem is provided with lugs 28 passing through openings 99 in concavity 25' and bent against the under face of the support ing member. The stem 16 of Fig. 3 likewise extends vertically upwardly and is arranged directly above the spindle 20, the body portion of this stein passing centrally through the top portion of the upper section 15 and through the body of the cap 18. The top section is defined by an annular groove 30 in which the skirt 24: of the cap seats. The cap ma be secured in the groove in any manner as or instance, by means of lugs 22. An annular rib 26' upon the stem 16 and engaging the upper face of the top section, together with the engagement of the lower end of the stem with the concavity 25, insures the position of the stem. The spring actuated engaging pin 19 of both forms of the invention is adapted to register with the notches 13 in the bottom face of twisting h ad. 31 denotes a collar on the pin and 32 denotes a spring which surrounds the pin and seats against the collar and the circumferential portions 522 .or, 22 respectively, as the case may be to yieldably hold the pin in operating position. The opposite ends of the pin slide in holes in the cap and circumferential portion, respectively. 33 denotes a counter weight arranged in the top body and positioned on the opposite side of the stem from the spring actuated engaging pin to serve as a balance therefor. This counter weight may be a pin, as shown, or may be of any other conformation. It is preferably secured in the top section, beneath the cap, and is of a weight exactly equal to the combined weight of the engaging pin and its actuating spring so that the weight of the top body will be uniformly positioned about the stem and spindle upon which the top spins. 34f denotes holes in the body of the cap adapted to be entered by the hook 12 of the winding spring during the twisting operation of the head.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A top body comprising a lower section having a centrally arranged spindle, an upper section, a supporting member having its opposite edges fastened between said sec tions, and a stem, the body portion of which is fitted in a centrally arranged hole in the upper section and the lower end of which is associated with the supporting member, said stem being arranged directly above and in alignment with said spindle.
2. A top body consisting of a lower section having a centrally arranged spindle, an upper section having an annular flange around the marginal edge of the lower sec tion, a supporting member, the opposite portions of which are fastened against the circumferential margin of the lower section and adjacent the annular flange of the upper section, a stern the lower end of which is secured to the supporting member and the body portion of which is snugly fitted within the upper section, said stem being arranged centrally of the top body to extend vertically upwardly in direct alignment with said spindle.
3. A top body comprising aiower bowl shaped section having a centrally arranged spindle, an upper bowl shaped section the marginal edge of which is secured to the lower section, a supporting member between said sections and having its marginal edge secured between the sections, a cap: centrally arranged on the upper section, and a stern secured in said cap, in said upper section and in said supporting member and vertically arranged centrally of the ,topbody and directly above said spindle.
4. A top body comprising a lower bowl shaped section having a centrally arranged spindle, an upper bowl shaped section, one of said sections having an annular flange spun about the marginal edge of the other bowl shaped sectioinfa supporting member arran ed transversely f said seeticne and having its marginal edges secured between the sea-in of the sections, a cap upon the upper section, and a stem arranged centrally in said cap, said upper section and said Supporting mem er.

A tap body comprising a lower bowl shaped section having a centrally arranged spindle, an upper bowl shaped section hav, ing an annular edge secured to the edge of the lower section, a cap secured centrally upon the upper section of the top body, a support secured in and to the top section and a stem arranged centrally in the body upon the support and extending vertically u ward through'hcles in said top body and cap and directly above and in alignment with said spindle.
6. A top body comprising a lower bowl shaped section having a. centrallyarranged spindle,a supporting stripupon the marginal edge of said lower section; and hav 'ing a depression, an upper bowl shaped sec tion secured'to the lower bowl shaped sec tion and fastening the edges of. the support ing strip between said sections, the depreslit) sionin said strip being centrally arranged, and a stem arranged in said depression and extending vertically upward through the upper section in direct alignment with said spindle.
7. A top body comprising a lower bowl shaped section having a centrally arranged spindle, a supporting strip extending transversely across said lower section andshavg1naledge of saidsection, an upper bowl shaped section having an annular flange spun about said lower section and supporting strip, whereby said supporting strip mg its opposite ends restingupon the inarfirom said upper section, a cap having a skirt snugly fitted upon said annular shoulder, and a stem centrally arin saidstrip and its body portion snugly fitted in holes in said capand upper bowL shaped section. o Signed at Bridgeport, in the county of Fair-field and State of Connecticut, this 19th day ofJanuary, A.-D.,'1922.
