York, have invented a certain new and useful Means for Feeding Adhesive Material to Box-Making Machines, of which the following is a specification. q In the art of makin paperboxes and cartons it is usual to employ a gang of machines each attended by two or more laborers for applying stripsof material to the boxes dur ing the process of making the same, such machines being. known usually as stripping machines. Each machine is equipped with an adhesive hopper or receptacle from which the material is fed as required by a roller, dipping into the adhesive and over which roller the strip is moved by handler taking up a film of the adhesive. It isco-in mon practice for one'of the two attendants by amanual operation to replenish the supply of adhesive, which replenishment reuires the attendant to carry a receptacle rom a'glue barrel to the stripper; such operations involvin the dipping. of the ad hesive from the %arrel, carrying it to the machine, and pouring it into the machine hopper or receptacle, in the course of which procedure a considerable waste. of glue takes place. The deposit of the adhesive accidentallyupon the floor leaves the lattenin an unsanitary, and often a filthy,condition, and the time required for the attendanttoreplenish the supply amounts in the course of a year to a considerable item in the wayof ages, for the reason that while one attendant is engaged in such task the other attend ant remains idle for the period required :to perform the labor, in addition towhich the adhesive frequently becomes filled with foreign matter owing to the storage of such material in an open barrel exposed to dust and dirt.
According to the present; invention, the foregoing obje'ctionsare overcome, at least to a great extent, with the result thattiine and labor are economized, the floor remains in a sanitary, cleanly condition, and the ad hesive is freefrom dust anddirt. i

The feed pipe or main is supported by any suitable means (not shown), and said pipe or main is provlded with a desired number of branch pipes D, each having a valve or gate 03. The branch pipes depend from the feed pipe or main toward and over the receptacles or hoppers B, and when the valve or gate cl in each branch pipe is opened, the liquid material is free to flow by gravity from the pipe C through the branch pipes D directly into 7 the hopper B.
Provision is made for storing a relatively lar e quantity ofthe adhesive material, it
being preferred to use a feed tank E, supported in a raised position above the horizontal planeof the pipe C by a stand '6, or equivalent supporting means. Said tank E is a closed receptacle of any suitable character, whereby dirt and dust can be kept out of the liquid material.
The adhesivev material has a tendency to settle within the tank, and in order to maintain such material at .the proper constituency, I provide, means for agitating the material as 4 desired. I
The agitating means is shown as a shaft F','the lower'endof which is supported in astep bearing f a liixed to the bottom of the tank, said shaftbeing provided with blades or wings f. 'The agitator shaft F extends upwardly through the top of the tank, so that said agitator may be driven by a shaft G having a pulley g.
The adhesive material is of such consistency that it flows sluggishly within the feed pip or main C, and'it becomes "necessary 'toprovide some means ,for impelling the liquid material within the pipe, In the preferred embodiment of the invention I employ a stand pipe H intermediate the horizontal feed pipe Cand the elevated tank B, said stand pipe being of such height and capacity that it contains normaly a sufficient quantity of the liquid material to establish a heador pressur operating to im elthe liquid material within the said pipe The stand pipe is coupled at its lower end to the feed pipe or main C, whereas the other end of said stand pipe is coupled to the lower portion of tank E.
A strainer h is provided across the inlet to the stand pipe in order toexc'lude foreign matter from the stand pipe H and the feed pipe C. Said stand pipe is provided with a gate or valve h which normally remains in an open condition for the flow of the adhesive material by gravity from the tank E into the stand pipe, but said valve or gate it may be closed at any time when it becomes necessary to cut off the stand pipe H from communication with the tank E.
The adhesive material has a tendency to clog or obstruct the feed pipe or main, and at times it becomes necessary to clean out the feed pipe. To enable the cleaning out operation to be performed with ease and facility, I provide the feed-pipe at one end with removable closure 71, whereas the other end, i of the feed pipe, is extended beyond the stand pipe H, as shown in Figure 2, said extension 2" being readily accessible, and the extended end portion of the feed pipe be;- ing closed-up by a removable plug j'. will b understood that the plugs i y' may be removed from the respective end portions of the horizontal feed pipe, and any suitable cleaning, medium maybe applied to said feed pipe for blowing out the matter which clogs or obstructs said pipe. I
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim 'asnew and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. An apparatus of they'class described,
embodying a plurality of boxmaking machlnes each provided with'a hopper and with means for supplying an adhesive to ma-' terial adapted to be manipulated by an attendant, an adhesive feed tank in elevated relation to said box making machines, a feed pipe adjacent the hoppers of said machines, said feed pipe having means for "controlling the distribution of adhesive material to the hoppers of the individual machines, and a stand pipe connected to the tank and to the mitting the pipe to be cleaned, a stand pipe connected with the feed pipe intermediate the ends thereof and connected also with the tank for establishing the head or pressure required to impel the flow ofmaterial within said pipe, and means for distributing material from the feed pipe to the individual machines at will In testimony whereof I, have signed my name hereto this 23rd day of September, 1920.
