OF NEW YORK, E. Y.
PEOPELLING ATTACHMENT BOB BOATS.
Application flied June 5,
To allwiwm it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jorur N. Conomx, a citizen of the United States, and a. raident of the city of New York bore of Manhattan, in the county and state New York, have invented a new and Improved Propelling Attachment for Bosh; of which the following is a full, clear, and exact desari tion.
invention relates-to an attachment for boats, and has for an object the provL sion of means whereby a person can very readily 0 state the boat by means of a. propeller w ich is connected with a frame or support readily applied to and removed from the boot structure at will. This frame contains all the necessary elements for propolling and steering the boat without requiring any alteration of the boat structure.
Another object resides in the provision of a propelling attachment which 13 especially simple and compact and readily portable.
A further ob ect resides in the particular construction and arrangement of arts which are hereinafter described and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings The invention is illustrated in the draw ini of whichigure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section taken through the end of the boot and through the portable unit.
Figuri? 2 IS a section taken on the line The for l of the invention shown in the drawings is a preferred form, although it is understood t at modifications in the con struction and arrangement of the parts and in the character of the materials used may be adopted without departing from the spirit of the invention.
As shown in the drawings, the invention includes a boat having a bottom 1 and a. rear or transom 2 at the intersection of which a. block or base portion 8 is disposed. The unit which I attach to the boat for the purpose of propelling the same comprises a bearing portion 4 through which a shaft 5 extends. This shaft has on its end pinions 6 and 7 To one end of the bearing 4 a vertical plate 8 is disposed, the lower end of which is flanged as at 9 and connected by any suitable means to the bottom or interior of the boat, refer-ably the base block 3. To the other end of the bearing portion 4, which rests on the top edge of the transom 2, I connect a U-sliaped frame, one leg 10 of 1922. Serial m. scores.
which extends downward! ud'acent the rear face of the transom 2 and as ostened thereto a plate 11 extendingtmnsversely to the leg 1 and hnvin at opposite ends sleeves 12 and 13 throng]? which bolts 14 extend to fasten theends of the plate 11 against the transom, thereby disposing the Uchsped frame, of which 1e 10-is a portion, rigldl with respect to t e, boat. The U-sha frame is provided with a. base portion 15 and a second leg 16 parallel to the leg 10. This second leg 16 is ri idly spaced from the leg 10 by brace members 17 and 18 can tending thorebetween. The end of shaft 5 is journnled in the upper end of the leg 16. A ropeller shaft 19 1s journaled at opposite end; 111 the legs 10 and 16 and controls a propeller 20, preferably a four-bladed ropeller. A pimon 21 is mounted on the s aft 9 and is connected to the pinion 7 by chains 22. The upper end of the leg 16 1s flared outwardly and rearwardly and constitutes a portion 23 to receive the upper end of a ru der shaft 94 provided at its upper end with a manually operable device, such as a wheel 25, and 'along its lower end with a rudder 26. The lower end of the rudder shaft 24 is suitobl fastened to the end of a. curved bracket p ate 2'1 fastened as at 28 lay any suitable means to the base 15 of the shaped frame.
The pinion 6 meshes with a gear 29 which is mounted loosely on a shaft 30 one end of which is rotatably mounted on the late 8.
A- pinion 31 is connected rigidly to t e gear 29 and is connected also to a. handle portion 82, permitting the manualcoperation of the ar 29. The pinion 31 is adapted to permit t 0 transmission of power to the gear 29 through other means than by manually operable means.
It is therefore observed that by movin the handle 32 power is transmitted throng the gear 29, pinion 6, shaft 5, pinion 7, chain 22, pinion 21, shaft 19, through the propeller 20. The engagement of the lie 9 and the plate 11 with portions of the boat firmly fastens the attachment to the boat. It is found that with a comparatively slight cllort the boat is propelled throu h the water in :1 much easier manner than 3 rowing. To remove the attachment from the bout, it is merely"nccessary to remove the bolts 14 and disconnect the flange 9 from the base portion 3, which is preferably fastened thereto by a screw 33. t will, therefore, be
