Description
UNITED STATES FRANCIS B. ABBOTT, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN TRANSPLANTERS.
y Specication formingpart of Leiters Patent No. 146,156, dated Jal nary` 6, 1574; application filed October 24, 1873.
To all whomft may concern.-
Be it known that I, FEANcIs B. ABBOTT, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented an Improvement in TranspIanting-Trowels, of which the following is a speeiication:
The present invention consists of a sheetmetal blade, Which is of suitable size to separate the earth around the roots of plants and 110W- ers, and which is openon 011eside to be expanded by its iiexibility, and compressed by a band, which is moved up and down on the idly attached to a central cap, C, which serves as ameans for handling the tool and a support for other parts hereinafter named. A
metal ring or clamping-band, D, is placed around the blade A for the purpose of depressing it, and to this ring is rigidly fastened a connecting-bar, E, to which is attached rack E', its shank I extending up through the cap C. A segmentlever, F, is pivoted t0 the upper end of blade A, and arranged, when moved up and down, to raise and lowerthe rack E,
and carry the ring or bandD with it, the shank I of the rack being guided by the cap C.
The operation of the device is as follows: The segment-lever F is brought up, as shown in Fig. 2, bringing the band D down on the blade A, so as to lessen the area at its base. The blade is then placed around the roots of a plant, so that the top will project through the opening J in the side of the blade. The latter is then pushed down by the hand toa proper depth, then `turned to one side, the
earth being used a fulerum to lift the-plant out of its bed. To remove the `plant from the blade A, it may be inverted, and the earth 1 wet With Water against the blade, so as to be readily removed by bringing the lever F down, as in Fig. 1, enlarging the. area of the blade.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Pat-` ent- 1. The combination, in a transplanter, of I the blade A, cap C, and band D, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, in a transplanter, of the.
blade A, cap C, band D, bar E, rack E', and segment F, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.A
