Description
E. M. FORRESTER. I Gumhined Duster-Handles a nd wi dow-omama 1 Patente d Jan. 6,1874.
fmiwlfwi UNITED STATES PATENT CFFIGE.
ELIZABETH'M. FORRESTER, OF SALEM, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED DUSTER-HANDLES AND WINDOW-OPERATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 146,128, dated January 6, 1874 application filed November 21, 1873. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIZABETH M. Fon- REsTER, of Salem, in the county of Essex, in
the State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement which I designate as a Combined Duster-Handle and Window-Operator, and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact'description of the same, reference being hadto the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same.
Like letters refer to like parts in the different figures of the drawing.
The difficulties and perplexities attending the proper airing and dusting of rooms are well known and appreciated by all ladies conversant with housekeeping. The handles of ordinary brooms and clusters are seldom long enough to reach high ceilings and cornices without the use of a step-ladder, or some equivalent device, while the pulling down or pushing up of windows is equally diificult to acccomplish by the ordinary methods.
The object of my invention is to obviate these difliculties by providing a neat, cheap, and effective device for the several purposes named. Its nature will be readily understood by the following description:
In Fig. 1, A is the body or staff of the implement; B,a tunnel-shaped or flaring socket, attached to one end of the same; 0 a ferrule, F a spring, D a hook or pull, E a shoulder or push, and G a ring. The ferrule O and spring F constitute an ordinary umbrella lock or catch reversed, the ferrule 0 being fast to the staff A, and slipping'easily over the end of the hook D and spring F, as shown. Any number of joints or pieces may be used, being coupled together in this manner, or in any similar manner, thus lengthening the staff to any desired extent. The socket B is designed for holding an ordinary small feather-duster or broom, the handle of which is pushed forcibly into said socket, where it is retained by friction. The hook D is for the purpose of pulling down the upper sashes of windows, and the shoulder E for closing the same or pushing them back to place, when desired.
The ring G is used for hanging up the imple' ment, and also for pulling down windows by being passed over a suitable projection on the sash of the same, provided for that purpose.
I am aware that Letters Patent of the United States were granted to one Tobey, June 9,1868, numbered 78,844, for a device to be used in connection with a pull for raising and lowering windows, consisting of a filed October 6, 1871, and thereafter rejected,
in which a knob or hook provided witlr a screw for inserting the same in a suitable handle is described, but neither said hook or said handle is shown or described therein as being provided with a flaring socket for holding a duster, or having an extensible handle, as in my invention.
United States, dated March 10, 1868, for an improvement in window-pulls, in which a hook, having a square flat head, is described, said hook being inserted in a handle and working in connection with a meta lic plate inserted in the sash of the window, which plate is provided with an aperture corre-. sponding with the head of 1 said hook; but the pull of said Oramer is materially difi'erent from mine, not being provided with the duster-holding socket, or having an extensible handle.
I therefore do not claim anything shown or describedin said rejected application, or in said patent of 1868, where in and of itself considered; but
What I do claim is- The combined duster-handle and windowoperator described, consisting of the staff A,
ELIZABETH FORBESTER.
Witnesses L. S. TUGKERMAN, ANDREW Fitrz.
I am also aware that, one (Jramer obtained Letters Patent of the...
