AUTOMATIC PRESSURE VALVE.
Application filed April 18, 1922;] Serial No. 654,945.".
. Be it known that we, JOSEPH G. HARRIS and GEORGE D. JAQUETT, citizens of the United States, residing at Jacksonville, in the county of Duval and State of Florida,
have invented certain new and useful Imf provements in Automatic Pressure Valves, of which the following is a specification.-
more particularly to devices of this characv terfor automatically shutting off the intake passage'of gas or the like inievent of the pressure belng reduced below a certain predetermined or safe degree, orof the gas ceasing forcany reason to flow, to prevent:-
the escape of gas when the pressure is restored.
Another object of the'invention is to provide a device of this characterincluding a pressure influenced diaphragm' and a gas controlling valve, and means whereby the gas controlling valve and diaphragm are operatively associated.
With these and otherobjects in view the invention consists in certain novel features ofconstruotion as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claim, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention: 1
Figure 1 is a vertical section.
Fig. 2 is a plan view with the closure and diaphragm detached.
An automatic shut-off valve in accordance with this invention, comprises a flanged shell or casing 10, to which is attached at one side an intake 11, and to which is attached at its opposite side an outlet 12.
Integral with, and arranged within the shell 10, as well as being of less height than the height of the shell 10, is a partition 13,
which divides the shell or casing 10 into .three chambers, one of which is an inlet,"
chamber 14 into which opens the intakell, another is an outlet chamber 15 with which communicates the outlet 12, and the other of which is a diaphragm chamber 15, ar-
ranged over the inlet and outlet chambers and permanently '11'1- opened communlcatlon with the outlet chamber 15. Communication between the diaphragm chamber and Arrangedwithin the upper portion of the chamber-'14, as well as secured to;the wall tivcly soft metal and which has; its lower edge bevelled to providea 'va-lveseat 17,
withwhich cooperates a valve 25, for I the purpose of controlling com1nun1cat1on be- Th1s1nven't1on relates to shut off valves, I

shell or casing l0,'-.is aflanged closure 19,
andvwith 'thetfiange, thereof opposing'tl'ie-li. flange'of theishell or casing 10. Extending,
tween the fiangesLof-the shell. and cover is;

and the said hold-fast devices 18', further provide means for detachably.connecting theflcover to the shell. The diaphragm 2Q is adapted to be expanded by the pressure of gas against itslower face. p
Secured in the top of the member 17,
projecting thereabove and having its'upper end offset outwardly with respect to the j member 17 is a su ortin element 21 to pp 9; a
which is eocentricallypivoted through the medium ofthe pivot pin 22, a lever 23,
That
which extends overthe member 17. end of the lever 23, which extends over-the member 17' has pivotally connected therewith, as at 27, a dependingvalve stem 26, i
which carries on its lower end the valve 25.
lever 23, 1s;
Carried by the'otherend ofthe a counter-weight 24.
Extending through the closure 19 and the diaphragm20 is a'push rod 28having a push ,f
button 29 at the upper end externally-of the closure. The rod 28 is pivot d a its lower end to the lever 23 between the pivot 22 and the weight2 l, as at 30, andisprovided with clamp'nuts 31' and 32 where it"- passes through the diaphragm for securing it to the latter.
By this means the rod 28, diapliragin2Q and lever 23 are coupled to operate in unison as will be obvious. i 4
Initially therod 28 open the valve 25 and permit thegas to will be elevated to I open and the burners lighted so long as thegas-pressure continues.
If the flow of the gas ceases from any cause, and thus automatically extinguishes the burners, the reduction of pressure will cause the diaphragmto collapse and-release the weight 24 and permit the latter to depressthe.longer end oif, the lever. 23 and elevate the shorter end and close the valve and hold it closed. I
When the flow of gas is resumed; it'will not pass to the extinguished burners-until the valve is opened by pressure applied manually to the rod 28-, which willie-f course, not take place until the burners are relighted;
to the burnerscannotberesumed after being accidentally cut off until the attendant-is,
' ready to relight the burners,- or given an opportunity to closetlie burners.
,The preferred einb. (liinent forth in the Sp8ClfiCa-tl0n,b11i3 it will be 'un- -(lerstood that modifications within the scope of the cla med invention may be 'made in the construction without departing from the principle of'the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
I of the inven :tioii: is disclosed inthe drawings and set Having thus described the invention what 7 is claimed as new 1s:
An automatic gas shut-off comprising a casing provided with a partitioirtolform an inlet, an outlet and a diaphragm chamber, the latterv beingarranged over saidiin let and outlet chambers and permanently communicating with the outlet chamber, a diaphragm secured with said casing and extending across theydiaphragm chamber, a hollow cylindrical member secured in the upper portion of said inlet chamber and having its lower end constituting a'valve seat, a supporting element secured, in the top of and having its upper end' offset with respect to said: member, a lever =eccentricallypivoted to the upperend of said element and arrangedover said inlet and outlet chambers, a valve stem extending through said member and'lia-ving its upper end pivotally connected provided with. a valve cooperatingwith said seat toropening and closmgsaidinlet chamber, a counter-weightsecured to tlieother end of said lever, and a vertically disposed push rod-pivotally connected to said lever between its pivot and said seat andifurther connected to' said diapl'i 'agnrand extended from saidicasing. y l v i In testimony whereof, we aflin ourysignw' tures hereto.
