UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANTOINE TRUFFY, OF COURBIEVOIE, FRANCE.
FOLDING- SEAT.
Application filed February 20," 1920. Serial No. 360,250.
To aZZ whomit may concern: I
Be it known that I, ANTOINE TRUFFY, a citizen of the Republic of France, and a resident of 15 Impasse Parmentier, Courbeof any suitable device.
A seat according to this invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the seat in its opened condition.
F ig. 2 is a side elevation closed.
Fig. 3 is a partial section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 3.
At the lower front part of the seat proper a there are mounted two angles Z) to which is pivoted one of the branches 0 of the X, the other branch (5, being pivoted to the fitting e which constitutes the support for the back f. The branches 0 and d are pivoted to each other by means of a pivot member 9.
The fitting e is pivoted at h to an angle i fixed to the upper rear part of the seat proper a.
Each of the branches 0 and cl consists of a sort of fork of steel tubing. The ends of the tubes that constitute the branch 0 form the rear legs of the seat, whilst those of the tubes of the branch 0? constitute the front legs.
The means for locking the branch (Z to the fitting e consists for instance of a pivot member 7' journalled in the two side plates of the fitting c and formed with two flats 7a.
This pivot member 7' is adapted to engage, when the seat is open, in notches Z formed in the ends of the tubes constituting the branch d. A rotational movement through about 90 prevents the pivot member y' from of the seat when slipping out of the notches Z, and thus fixes the branch (2? relatively to the back 7.
This seat which may be used as a folding seat in motorcars, boats, etc, may be fixed tothe floor on which it rests by means of grooved plates into which the ends of the legs are inserted.
It is to be understood that this invention is not limited to the constructional details 7 that have just been described, thus for instance the means of locking the legs to the back may be varied, and this method of pivoting the legs may be applied to all kinds of seats.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is 1. A folding seat, comprising a seat proper, a back pivoted to the rear of said seat proper, legs pivotally connected in a non-detachable manner and forming the branches of a jointed X, one of said branches being pivoted to the fore part of the seat proper, and the other branch to a downward extension of the back, at a point nearer to the connection between the seat proper and the back than to the pivot point of the two branches of the leg, for the purpose described, the ends of the said branches being provided with notches, and a revoluble member mounted in the back and having flattened portions to permit it to enter the notches and to be retained in said notches.
2. A folding seat. comprising a seat, a back pivoted to the seat, legs having branches at their ends and pivoted together, the branches of one leg being pivoted to the seat and the branches bf the other leg being pivoted a'short distance from their ends to the back, the ends of the said branches being provided with notches, and a revoluble member mounted in the back and having flattened portions to permit it to enter the notches and to be retained in'said notches.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
ANTOINE TRUFFY.
