' c. D. SNYDER v ROLLER FOR SKATES Filed June 4, 1921 Patented June 26, 1923.
. CHARLES n s vvnneyor seamen srames, I H IGAN."
ROLLER non SKATES.
To all whom it may concem Be it known that 1, CHARLES, D. SNYDER, va cltizen ofthe United States, residingat designates ;a conventional form of skate in 1 BerrieirSprings, in the county of Berrien and State of Michigam haveinvented certain new and useful. Improvements in Rollers for Skates, of which thefollowi-ng is a specification. y 1' Theinvention relates. to rollers for skates and has for its objectto provide a device of this character, comprising a body mem-. ber adapted to receive a channeled tire carrying member, said body; carrying memher having transversely disposed aperturesadjacent the periphery thereof for the reception of rivets,'the heads, of whichrivets retain the channeled member on the periphery of the body member.
A further object is to provide a skate roller having a removable tire carrying annular member disposed on a round body member, and to provide transversely disposed rivets extending through the body member and having their heads disposed in engagement with the sides of the channeled member thereby holding the channeled member against displacement. Also to provide rivet means so disposed in the body portion of the skate roller having a removan able rim thereon that its heads will maintain the removable rim against displacement, said heads being so disposed that when they are chiseled off by a chisel or other tool, the removable rim may be easily and quickly removed and replaced with a new rim and tire.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a skate showing the improved rollers applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a rear view of the skate and roller.
Figure 3 is an enlarged transverse sectional view through one of the rollers.
Figure 4 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the roller.
1921. Serial 1m- 474,eos.
Figure 5 is a detailperspective view of j portion of the tire channel or rim.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral brackets 2 on which are rotatably mounted,
onv shafts 3, rollers 4:. Each roller 4: c0mprises a round disc shaped body portion 5, which is preferably hollow as at ,6 for re- .ducing the weight of the roller and at the same. time saving material in. manufacture. The body portion 5 at a point centrally thereof is provided with abearing 7 for the reception of one of the axles 3, on which axle theroller rotates when the skate is in use; Extending transversely through the body 5 adjacent the periphery 8 thereof and; at
points spaced from each .otherjare rivets9,
the shanks 10 of which easily pass through the apertures 11 in the body member in such a manner as not to bind therein, and to be easily removable therefrom upon the removal of either of the integral heads 12 of the rivets. The heads 12 of the rivets extend beyond the periphery 8 of the body member 5 and overlie the flanges 13 of the removable rim 14, and hold said removable rim securely in place against transverse displacement. Disposed on the demountable rim 1 1- is a resilient tread 15, preferably" formed of rubber for preventing slipping and for taking up the shock during a skating operation.
During manufacture of the removable rims one of the flanges 13 is bent upwardly or outwardly of the dotted line position shown in Figure 5 after the tread 15 has been placed in position. The rim with its tread 15 is designed to be sold to dealers, and when the user of the skate desires to renew the tread, it will only be necessary for him to chisel off the heads of the rivets 9 on one side of the body member 5 and remove the rivets. After the rivets are removed the removable rim may be easily and quickly removed and replaced with a new rim and tire. When placing the new rim and tire on the body member 4, new rivets, 9 are passed through the apertures 11, and one of the heads 12 upset thereon with a rivet set or other tool, thereby securely holding the new rim in place.
From the above it willbe seen that a re movable rim for roller skate wheels is provided which is simple in construction, one which may be cheaply manufactured and one wherein the securing means consists of asingle piece and consequently is positive in its holding aetion.
The invention having been set forth- What is claimed as new and useful is:--
1. The combination With a skate roller comprising a round body member having disposed on the periphery thereof an annular tread receiving riin, tread engaging flanges carried by the rim, ofmeans for holding said tread rimagainst dis-placement on the body member, said means comprising rivets extending through apertures in the body member adjacent its periphery andheads carried by the ends of said rivets and overlying and engaging the sides of the flanges of the annular't'read' rim:
2. The combination" Witli a skate IOllei comprising a body member having disposed j thereon an annular flanged tread receiving rim, said tread rim and body member being ofequal thickness, of means for holding said tread rim against transverse displacement, said means comprising member's extending through the body member and provided with integral heads overlying and en aging the sides of the flanged tread rim.
3. The combination with a skate roller comprising a body member having disposed thereon a removable flanged tread carryingcomprising members extending through apertures in the body member, integralhead, carried by 's'a-1'd members ove lying engagin the sides flanged.
tread carryin ri-iti, the members extending through the body member being formed from riveting material, thereby allowing the heads to be formed thereon, and cut'ofl as;
desired. I I
In testininy whereof I- aff x my signat re.
CHARLES D. SNYDER.
