Description

Patented .June 26, 1923.
appiication ined May 1e,

and` State ot Pennsylvania, have invent-ed certa-m'new and useful Improvementsin Railway rllickets` ot'A which the ollowingis a, specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing. y
My invention relates to improvements in railyway tickets particularly adapted for i use in commutation travel.
A principal object ot my invention is to provide tickets for use in railway` travel by which travel. will be` stimulated. i
A :further object of` my invention is to provide a railwayticket in the useot which the rates oi tare automatically decrease i proportion to the increase in travel.
A further object of myinvention is `to provide a railway ticket1 comprising sepa- V- rate and detachable zone coupons or tickets and which may be used interchangeably in the different'zones for which the ticket is issued. f i 'M i A further object` of. my invention is to provide a single form of railway ticket provided with Zone coupons particularly adapted for monthly commutation `travel on a railway linewhich is divided linto zones, a passenger being enabled thereby to purchase any desired number ot the zone coupons and makingit unnecessary for the railway company tolpriovide separate tickets :tor each individual'zone. l
A further object of my ,invention is to provide a railway commutation ticket ot the type described, having an auditors stub separable 'from the ticket at the time oit sale whereby quick andaccurate auditing is assisted. i f
My invention further includes all ot the other various novel objects and features-ot construction and arrangement hereinafter more definitely specified and described.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a top plan view of the ticket; Fig. 2 is a perspective View; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the passengers end of the ticket with some of the leaves raised and Fig. 4 is a perspective View ot the auditors end of the ticket. Like letters designate the same parts in the difierent figures.

any suitable manner, as by staples` C. At` the lett hand side of the ticket are printed the conditions of sale/ot `the ticket, `a line D being Lprovided for the name of the purchaser `and a lineE tor signature 'in accept` ance `of the `conditions. i
The ticket illustrated in the drawings is adapted for use on a railway linenwhich is divided inte seven4 Zones, a coupon beingy provided for each of the zones,.the division lines' between the zone coupons being prei).-4 erably perforated thereby assistingin the detaching of the'izone coupons. It will be understood, of course, that my improved ticket is.l adaptable for use on a railway line ojl `any `number ot' `zones, the embodiment shown and described being illustrative only. v At the right hand end of the ticket isthe` auditor-ls stub which bears the same serial number, in .this instance @No A0007, as thel passengers end of theticket, and, as will be seein. the year, in this instance 419.227, is printed upon both the passengers stuband the auditors stub `the number l appearing` on the passengers stub indicating the `first month ot' the year, i. e., January, which ap"` pears in abbreviated form on the auditors stub.V t i n n Y "llo illustrate the use of the ticketwe will assume that a commuter lives in zone No. 4 andicommutes daily` into zone No. l, that is,
through tour Zones. He purchases his com-i` mutation ticlfzet on the first day of the month, asking for `a four Zone ticket and paying therefor the sum of $6.00 as indicated on the Zone coupon for Zone No. 4l. The ticket agent severs the entire` ticket on the line Flbetween zone coupons 4 and 5 in any suitable planner, `delivering the passengers end i to him. andY Jforwarding the auditors ystub.
` and l/ione'couponsfor Zones 5, 6 and 7 in# ticket and which have been accepted bythe purchaser, on entering any zone pays the conductor the sum of tive cents at the same time exhibiting to him the commutation yticket whereupon the conductor will either punch or preferably detach one of the zone coupons.
with the conditions of sale printed `0111353105` The ticket is sold at a figure which will make the cost of travel to the passenger less than if he paid the usual cash rates during each trip. For example, assuming that the commuter lives in the fourth zone and makes thirty round trips per month, paying cash each trip at the rate of ten cents per zone, the cost to him per day would be eighty cents or $24.00 per month. lf, however, he
purchases the commutation ticket the costy zone coupons, and in commuting thirty days per month, he would use two hundred and forty zone coupons which would be at the rate of two and one-half cents per zone, resulting in asaving of two and one-half cents per zone, through the use of this ticket; if, however, a commuter only uses two hundred of the zone tickets for which he would have paid the like sum of $6.00, the cost of the ticket would be at the rate of l three cents per Zone and if he used all of the zone tickets, viz: four hundred, the cost of the ticket would be at the rate of one and one-half cents only per zone. 1
It will therefore be seen that there is an automatic 4decrease in fare in proportion to' the greater extentof travel which, as has been demonstrated practically, will stimulate travel and increase the number of cash live cent fares payable by the holder of the ticket per each zone, and result in a substantialy increase in cash income to the railway companies utilizing my improved ticket.
lt is not necessary that the conditions of salel be printed other than on the top leaf .and the corresponding space in' the other leaves mav be utilized, if desired, Vfor advertising purposes, and the advertising rights claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States:
l. A railway ticket for commutation travel comprising a plurality of leaves secured together at each end, said leaves com prising a plurality of Zone coupons disposedy between the ends of each leaf, an appropriately designated detachable auditors stub at one of the ends and an appropriately designated passengers stub at the other end;
2.v A railway ticket for commutation travel'comprising a plurality of leaves secured together at each end, said leaves'comprising ya plurality of zone coupons similarly delineated and disposed between the ends of each leaf, an appropriately designated detachable auditors stub at one 0f the ends and an appropriately designated passengers stub at the 'other end, the entire ticket being adapted to be severed into two parts on any delineation.
3. A railway ticketv for commutation travel comprising a plurality of leavespermanently secured together at each end, said leaves comprising a plurality of zone coupons similarly delineated and disposed between the ends of each leaf, an appropria-tely designated detachable auditors stub at one of the ends and an appropriately designated passengers stub at the other end, said stubs eachl bearingv the ticket number and the month of issuance, the entire ticket being adapted to be severed into two parts on any delineation.
in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 16th day of May, 1922.
