GARBAGE DESTROYER.

To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that l, LESLIE W. Bases, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wilmington, in the county of New Castle and State of Delaware, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garbage Destroyers, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates t0 machines for destroying garbage andas the primary object thereof, contemplates the provision of a device of this character which has its discharge in communication with a sewer pipe, and embodies means for positively crushing all particles of garbage and especially bones, so as to insure the passage of all garbage deposited into the machine to be subsequently pulverized and discharged intoand through the sewer.
rlhe invention has for an additional and equally important object the provision in a device of the above character of grinding means positioned below the crushing means and arranged to operate simultaneously therewith for the insuring of the pulverizing of the garbage.
The invention also embraces the provision of a machine of the above character wherein improved means is employed for flushing the hopper and the material which has been crushed and pulverized through the machine and into the sewer. As a Jfurther object, the invention includes the provision of a trap of novel form which is mounted within the main body of the machine being preferably interposed between the tubular discharge of the grinding means and the sewer pipe, clean out and access plugs being mounted through .the maincasing of the bod of the machine and in the trap to permit o access being had to the interior of the casing in the event'that the same should become clogged and to the grinding means for the purpose of cleaning samewhen desired.
More specific ,objectsof the invention include improved transmission means for operating the grinding and crushing means simultaneously and the construction and mounting of the cover of the hopper, which is rendered air and water-tight for sanitary purposes.
Among the other aims and objects of the present invention, may be recited the provision of a machine of the above mentioned character, with a view to compactness and wherein the number of parts are comparatively few, the construction simple, the cost of production low and the eiiciency high.
Further objects, as well as the nature, characteristic features, and scope of the present invention, will be more readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims forming a part of the specification.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure l is a vertical, longitudinal, sectional view through the improved machine, showing the cover and crushing and grinding means in elevation,

Figure 7 1s an end elevational detail of the same.
Referring now, more particularly to the accompanymg drawings, there is provided the improved casing, generally designated 1, of a substantially rectangular configuration and which is suitably supported as by legs 2 over the sewer pipe 3, the upper portion of the casing beingfprovided with a tubular compartment 4, the inner end of the top part of which is open and which communicates with anv enlargement or swell 5 of the casing, the latter in turn being positioned beneath an opening 6. Disposed above the casing is a hopper 7, the lower part of which is flanged as at 8 and rests upon the enlarged portion of the casing, being secured thereto by suitable fasteners 9, the connection being rendered water-tight as by a gasket 10.
In order to positively crush all particles of garbage and bone especially which are deposited into the hopper, crushing rollers 11 are provided, which have their trunnions 12 journaled in the front and rear portions of the enlargement 5 of the casing. As will be noted, these crushin rollers are situated immediately beneath t e opening 6 so that all material deposited into the hop er will, be obligedtopass between these rol ers and be positively crushed. The outer or forward trunnions are extended and fitted with pinions 13 and 14, the former being thicker for a purpose that will presently7 appear.
(lo-acting with the crushin means is improved grinding means, in t e present 1nst-ance consisting of a feeding screw 15, the respective ends of which are reduced as at 16 and 17, the end 17-being journaled through the casing, While the main body of the screw 15 is situated in the tubular housing 4. Rigidly connected to 'the reduced end 16 1s a revolvin cutter 18, (see Figures 6 and 7) while isposed about the reduced end 16 and adjacent the cutter 18 is a stationary cutter 19, the latter being suitably locked as by a pin and socket connection 20 to a ring 21, which is frictionally engaged in the free end of the tubular casing, the ring being provided with a cross bar in which is formed a bearing 22 for the journaling of the end 16. A suitable retaining element, such as a set screw 23 is connectedto the threaded eX- tremity of the reduced journaling portion 16 for maintaining the parts in proper relation. By this arran ement, it will thus be apparent that after t e material, especially the bones, has been crushed, the same is depositedl on the feeding screw, which carries it toward and forces it through the cutters 18 and 19.
In order that the crushing and grinding means ma be operated simultaneously, a relatively arge gear 24 is connected to the reduced extremity 17 of the feeding screw and meshes with the wide pinion 13 so that when rotation is imparted to the reduced portion 17 of the feedin screw, in any suitable manner as by a han wheel 25, the screw will be rotated while the inner meshing gear 24 and pinion 13 imparts rotation to the pinion 13 and inasmuch as this pinion meshes with the other pinion 14, the crushing rollers will be rotated toward each other.
In connection with the foregoin it is to be observed that the front wall of t e casing adjacent the journaling portions of the crushing rollers and fe'edn screw is provided with a detachable section which is retained in osition by the fastenin devices 24 and 25 Inasmuch as the crus ing and grinding means extend into the casin in one direction by reason of the detacha le section ofthe front wall of the main casing, the crushin and grinding means may be removed odily when it is desired to clean the same. d
In order that the material'may be conducted to the sewer pipe 3, a trap 26 in the form of a horizontal S is positioned in the casing beneath the housing,'the upper end communicating with the said housing 4, while the .lever outlet .end is connected as by a. union 27 to the sewer pipe 3. A clean out plug 28 is removably engaged at the bend of the trap to facilitate cleaning in the event that the same becomes clogged, while a removable access plug 29 is mounted at the upper end of the pipe and casing to facilitate access to the grinding means when it is desired to clean or adjust the same, as apparent.
Vith a view toward providing the improved flushing means, the upper part of the hopper is formed with an integral, annular chamber 30, the lower .portion of which is provided with a circular seiies of erforations so that water admitted into this chamber will flow down the inclined sides of the hopper and thus flush the same and facilitate the passage of the garbage through the machine. The hopper is formed with an integral chamber.31, which communicates with the annular perforated chamber 30 and has fitted thereto a valve controlling inlet water pipe 32. In connection with the flushing means an auxiliary fiush pipe may be connected with the outlet portion ofthe trap as at 33, if desired. VThis pipe may also be used as a vent pipe if the occasion requires.
In order that the machine may be rendered water-tight and at the same time provide for sanitary regulations, the hopper is fitted with a suitable closure. In reducing this feature of the invention to practice, a bailshaped frame 34 has one end swingably connected as at 35 to the hopper while the opposite end is provided with a hook like catch 36 designed for association with a keeper 37 integral with the outer surface of the rim of the hopper in a point opposite the point of the connection of the fra-me. A manually operable screw 38 is arranged through the middle portion of the bail frame and has its inner enlarged end 39 swiveled as at 40 concentric of and to a rimmed and flanged cover 41. An annular gasket 42 is fitted in an annular recess in the edge of the rim of the cover for co-acting with the upper edge of the hopper. Suitable means, such as a cross bar 43, ma be connected to the outer end of the screw ihr facilitating the clamping of the cover on the hopper.
In order to protect the transmission means, a secondary casing 44 may be arranged about the gears and pinlons and connected in suitable manner exteriorly of the main casin 1.
It is believed in view of the foregoing t at a further detailed description of the operation of the invention will be unnecessary likewise it is believed that the advantages of the invention will be readily apparent.
Having thus fullyT described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is l. In a machine of the character described, a casing2 a hopper arranged above and communicat'ing with the casing, means for flushing the hopper, @Ombined (brushing, grinding and conveying means mounted in the casing beneath the hopper and communicating therewith and extending in one direction in the casing, and a trap arranged in the casing beneath and in communication with the outer end of the conveying means and extending beneath the conveying means in the direction opposite to that which the conveying means extends and having its outer end adapted for connection with a sewer pipe.
2. In a machine of the character described, a main casing provided with an enlargement at the upper portion thereof and with an opening above the enlargement, and further provided with a tubular secondary casing beneath and communicatin with the enlargement, a hopper connecte to one end of the enlargement and extending horizontally of the main casing and communicating with the opening, ushing means associated with the hopper, positive crushing means mounted in the enlargement, grinding means mounted in the secondary casing beneath the crushin means, means for operating the crushing ang grinding means simultaneously and a trap contained Wholly Within the main casing and having one end Communicating with discharge end of the secondary casing and extending directly beneath the secondary casin;r in an opposite direction thereto and having the outer end adapted for connection with a sewer pipe.
