UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEr ED. ELISHA MACK, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK.
IMPRovMENT IN cUFFs.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,957, dated December 30, 1873; application led August l, 1873.
1 To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, En. ELIsHA MACK, of the city and county of Albany, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cuffs or Wristbands; and I do hereby declare that the following is a description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specication, in which- Figure l represents a Wristband or cuff opened out flat, and exhibiting the several parts constituting` the improvements in this invention. Fig. 2 represents the cuff adjusted for its iirst Wear. Fig. 3 represents the same for the second wear. Fig. 4 represents the same for the third wear. Fig. 5 represents the same for the fourth wear. 4
My invention relates to a reversible cuff or Wristband, and isl an improvement on the Evans patent of July 31,1866; and consists of certain improvements whereby the same cuff can be used four times before being cast away, and present at least three styles of exposed ends when in use in the several chan ges this cuff can be made to undergo.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it in reference to the drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, the same letters indicating like parts.
Inthe drawings, A A represent the body of the cuff or Wristband, which may be made of either plain or linen-faced paper, or linen. The said body is made to consist of the Acentral piece A and the supplementary nap-pieces a and a', made With and connected With the central piece A at the folding lines :r and which lines are made on a slight curve, as in the case of collars, and shown ,in Fig. l. The central portion A has its ends provided with three buttonholes, z z z, each, the central one, z', standing out of line with ranging holes z z, by which, when only two of the ranging holes and the central holes are connected, the cui' will be made to have a tapering form when secured in position, as in Figs. 2, 3, 4, and 5. One of the supplementary iiaps a is made with one style of corners, as c c, and the other flap a with a different style of corner, as e e, or the corners can be variously changed in their styles to suit the prevailing fashions.
In the Evans invention, he, by making his cuff reversible, enabled the wearer to use the v cuff twice, and cause it to present a new and clean appearance at each change, as he made them in the reversings of the order of their reversed, and ilap a is exposed outward, as in` Fig. 3. In the third'use one of the flaps, say iiap a', is folded inward, leaving iiap a out and back, as in Fig. 4. In the fourth use the remaining flap a is also folded in, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 5.
In the first and second uses of the cuff, the edges of the exposed ends will present a plain appearance, and in the third and fourth uses they will present a folded edge. At the folding lines x', I would emboss the cuit' with imitation of stitching, as shown in the several figures, which will give a nish to the cuff in Whatever way worn.
By these improvements the wearer is enabled, for the outlay of the price heretofore paid for cuffs, to use this culi twice as long as the reversible cuff heretofore used, and have a greater variety of styles, with advantages .which are apparent.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
l. A detachable cuff or Wristband in Which the iiap a is combined with the central portion A, so as to permit the cuff to be worn in three different positions, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. A detachable cuff Ior Wristband in which the flaps a and a' are combined with the central portion A, so as to permit the cuff to be Worn in four different positions, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
ELISHA MACK.
