IMPROVEMENT IN THE MANUFACTURE OF CATCHES FOR J EWELERS USES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,938, dated December 30, 1873; application filed December 8, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. FULLER, of Pawtucket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain Improvements in Jewelers and other Catches, and in the manufacture thereof, of which the following is a specification:
My said invention relates to the manufacture of catches for jewelers use, and for other uses; and consists in making said catches entirely of and from one piece or single strip of wire. The old method is to braze or solder a slotted ring to one end of said wire, and subsequently to open and bend said ring to the required shape.
The accompanying drawing, showing the old and the new catch, is hereby made a part of this specification, the indicating letters thereon referring to the same parts when repeated.
Figure 1 is a view of the old catch, the slotted ring a being soldered to the end of the threaded wire I). Fig. 2 shows a single strip of threaded wire, and Fig. 3 a single strip of plain wire, from either or both of which I make my said improved catch, as hereinafter described. Fig. 4 is a view of a catch made of threaded wire, and Fig. 5 shows a catch made of smooth or plain wire.
My said improved manner of manufacturing said catches is substantially as follows: I take the wire of which the same are to be made, either threaded or smooth, as seen in Figs. 2 and 3, and flatten and enlarge one end thereof by any of the well-known means. I
then stamp, or punch, or die out the center and interior of said flattened and enlarged end, and at the same time out out the opening in the side thereof to make or form the slot 0. The catch is then completed by severing it from the wire, the threaded or smooth shank of the catch being left of the requisite length. The wire is then ready for a repetition of the process. The said described method may be continued or repeated ad l'iln'twn, and entire coils of wire maybe thus made into completed catches without inter' ruption or subsequent process. Catches of this kind,and made in substantially this manner, may be produced with much greater rapidity and at less cost than by the old method of soldering or brazing a slotted ring to the end of the wire. I do not confine myself to the styles of wire herein mentioned. Any style or size of wire may be made into catches in substantially the manner set forth.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The manufacture of catches, for jewelers and other uses, of or from a single strip of wire, by flattening and enlarging the end of said wire, and stamping or punching out the center and interior of said flattened end, and cutting the opening in the side thereof, substantially as described and shown.
