SANITARY DRINKING DEVICE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HERMAN OZLEK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Drinking Devices, of which the following is a specification.

One object of my invention is to prevent the spreading of disease often caused by persons drinking directly from containers such as bottles, such for example as bottles containing beverages sold in stores and amusement parks and in which no individual glasses are supplied and the purchaser drinks directly from the bottles. Very often such sales places do not have the facilities or take the time for properly cleansing the bottles and it is reasonable to believe that much disease is spread in this manner.

Another object of my invention is to provide devices of simple and cheap construction which can be readily applied to a bottle so as to enable a person to conveniently drink the contents without direct contact of the mouth with the bottle, after which, owing to the cheapness of the construction of the device, the latter can be destroyed.

These objects, and other advantageous ends which will be described hereinafter, I attain in the following manner, reference bein had to the accompanying drawings in whic Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view showing one of my improved devices applied to a bottle,

soft drink bottle having a neck 7 providing an opening 8 terminating in the outer end surface 9. My improved device 10 is preferably made from a blank of sheet paper or cardboard such as shown in Figure 3; the sheet material being preferably coated or saturated with wax or other liquid repellant material; said blank including a rearwardly tapering end extension 11 and a rearwardly flaring body portion 12. The blank between the end extension 11 and body portion 12 preferably has a part 13 which is bent substantially at right angles to the end extension 11 to provide a shoulder 14. This shoulder can be produced by placing the blank in a slightly heated mold and compressing the same and if desired the same compressing action can be used for slightly concaving the end extension or mouth piece 11.

The body portion 12 is split transversely as shown at 15; said split having its length entirely within the width of the body portion adiacent its extreme rear edge 16 so that there is a portion 17 located betweenthe split 15 and the extreme edge 16. This portion 17, when the device is to be applied to the bottle, is bent upwardly as shown in Figure 3 and the portion 18 between the split 15 and the shoulder-'14 is bowed downwardly. This permits the portion 18 to be located on one side of the neck 7 of theb'ottle and the integral portion 17 to be located around the opposite side of the bottle so that the entire device to the rear of the shoulder 14 sur-' rounds the neck of the bottle. The depth of the shoulder 14 is preferably such that when the portion 18 is in engagement with the outer surface of the neck 17 the inner surface of the mouth piece 11 will be flush with the inner surface of the opening 8 of the bottle neck 7 as clearly shown in Figure 2; said shoulder 14 abutting the end surface 9 of the neck 7; With the device in this position a person, by grasping the neck of the bottle and including the p0rti0n'18 in the hand, can firmly hold the device with the parts in said position relatively to the bottle and in drinking the contents of the bottle the person can drink directly from the trough provided by the mouth iece 11. If it is desired to set the bottle own any of the liquid on the mouthpiece instead of running down on the outer surface of the bottle will return directly into the bottle through the opening 8. If it is desired to release the entire hold on the bottle, the device will from the bottle where it will remain until i from the bottle.

The device can be quickly manufactured in large numbers at an extremely low cost stamping and pressing them as above set forth and furthermore a great number of the devices can be stored in a comparatively small space; thus rendering the same suitable .for use in small establishments such as above set forth.

In Figure 5, I have shown a slight modification in the form of splitting the body portion and instead of having a single split, I haveshown the body portion provided with two

splits

15 and 15"; the portion 17" between said splits having the same use as the portion 17 above described but it is located inwardly from the rear edge so that a part of the body portion will be located at opposite sides of thevportion 17 when the device is applied to a bottle. In all other respects the construction is similar to that described in connection with Figures 1 to 4 inclusive and I have given like parts similar reference characters.

While I have described my inventlon as taking a particular form, it will be understood that the various parts of my invention may be changed without departing from the spirit thereof, and hence do not limit myself to the precise construction set forth, but consider that I am at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly come within the scope ofthe appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A device. of the character described including a body portion having a split so as to provide a part adapted to be bent out of the plane of the adjacent portion through which a part of the container, can be inserted, said body portion having a projecting mouth piece; substantially as described.

2. .A device of the character described including a body portion having a split so as to provide a part adapted to be bent out of the plane of the adjacent portion through which a part of the container can be inserted, said body portion having a projecting mouth piece 'and a shoulder for engaging the end of the container; substantially as described.
