PACKING DEVICE.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STANWooD E. FLITNER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Englewood, county of Bergen, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to an improved packing crate for fragile articles.
By way of illustration I have illustrated my invention as utilized in the shipping ofmercury vapor lamps, but it will be understood that the invention is not limited to this particular use, and is useful in the arts generally.
I have discovered that, when a mercury vapor lamp is mounted on fabric bands, attached to the sides of a suitable frame, breakages in transit are reduced.
I have also discovered that when the band or tape, utilized to fasten the tube to the canvas strips is provided with an adhesive substance, such as a paste or glue that will stick to glass, the breakage hazard, due to the twisting and slipping of the tube in transit, is eliminated.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of my supporting frame showing a mercury vapor lamp ready to be shipped; Figure 2 is a similar View of the supporting frame with the lamp removed; Figure 3 is a view of the lamp provided with the adhesive band and strings for attachment to the canvas strip in the frame of Figure 2; and Figure 4 is a sectional view of the supporting frame taken on line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Referring to Figure 1, 1- is a rectangular frame made up of strips of wood of the desired mechanical strength, and 2, 2, are bands of yielding material, such as cotton fabric, extending across the opening between the sides of the frame and nailed to the sides as indicated at 3, 3. The fabric bands 2, 2, are each provided with a pair of holes 4, 4, for each lamp to be mounted in the frame, as will be readily understood. The vapor lamp is shown at 5, provided near each end thereof with fabric bands 6, 6, attached to the tube by an adhesive paste or glue of commerce which has the quality of adhering to glass the said bands 6 being provided with strings, 7 and 8, which are passed through the holes 4, 4, and tied in a knot as shown at 9, securely fastening the lamp in the frame 1, the adhesive'material joiningthe bands 6 and the lamp 5 preventj ing the twisting and slipping of the lamp in transit,

I claim as my invention:
1. In a shipping. crate, a support for fragile materials comprising a frame, a fabric material extending across the opening between the sides of said frame and separic material extending across the opening between the sides of said frame and separate adhesive covered means attached to the fabtearing off of the band 6, any glue or paste ric material and adhesively attached to said fragile materials for preventing twisting of the fragile material in shipment.
3. In a shipping crate, a support comprising a frame, a flexible material extending across the opening of said frame and separate adhesive covered means attached to said material for adhesive attachment to the article to be shipped.
4. In a shipping crate, a support comprising a frame, a fabric material extending across the opening of said frame and a. separate adhesive covered band attached to said fabric material for adhesive attachment to the article to be shipped.
