- w. A. SOMMERHOF PHONOGRAPH CABINET Filed Sept. 8. 1919 SMvah toz Sammerhof Patented June 19, 1923..
UNITED: "s'rarss WILLIAM A. SOMMERHOF, OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA.
PHONOGRAIH CABINET.
Application filed September 8, 1919. Serial No. 322,266.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I,W'ILLIAM A. SoMMnR- nor, a citizen of the United, States, residing at Erie,cin the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Phonograph Cabinet, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cabinets for phonographs. One of its objects is to providea novel sealing arrangement whereby the compartment containing the tone arm and the record, 1s rendered soundproof so that practically all noise resultingfrom the frictional engagement of the parts is eliminated. A further object is to provide sealing means which are simple and eliicientand in no way detract from the appearance of the cabinet of the phonograph.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel details of construction in combinations of parts which will hereinafter be more fully described and pointed out in thelclaims, it being understood that various changes may be made in the construction and-arrangements of the parts without departing'from the spirit of the invention. r
In the accompanying drawing the pre- In said drawing Figure 1 is a vertical section through the upper portion of the cabinet of a phonograph and showing the hinged cover closed and sealed.
Figure 2 is a top view of the cabinet with the cover removed.
Figure 3 is a bottom plan View of the cover. v I
Figure 1 is an enlarged section through the cooperating sealing means.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a flange secured on the top of the cabinet 2 and extending continuously around the compartment 3 at the cured in this groove dis a strip. 8 of felt or other soft. material adapted, when the.
cover is closed; to rest on the rib 4' and'lthiis ferred form of the invention has been shown. 1
top of the cabinet and which compartment completely seal the compartment 3 and prevent .the escape of sound from the compartment.
port the covers of phonographs on felt washers and the like but no means has been provided for sealing the connection between the cover and the cabinet so as to eliminate objectionable noises. this application constitutes an efficient sealing means, allows the cover to be closed noiselessly andfdoes not detract from the appearance of the cabinet but,on thecon- -trary, adds to the appearance thereof, 'especially if a colored felt is used in the groove 5. By having the felt in the groove it cannot be torn out of position andthe rib 4,
by projecting into the groove, holds the cover properlyv centered when closed and re lieves the hinge 7- from possible distortion. It will be noted that the walls of the groove 5 are spaced fromthe faces of the rib 4. Thus the cover 6 can be raised and low-- ered without frictionally engaging the rib and, consequently, there will be no sticking together of the parts;
What is claimed is It hasbeen the'practice heretofore to sup- I The device covered by 1. The combination with a phonograph cabinet and a' coverthereon, of continuous interfitting sealing portion upon the cabinet and-the coverfor sealing the compartment closed by the cover, the side walls of said interfitting portions being parallel and spaced apart, and a continuous strip of soft packing material secured within the coverand adapted to bear on the sealing means upon the cabinet. v
2. The combination with a phonograph cabinet having a continuous upstanding rib thereon, of a a cover having a continuous groove thereinwadapted to receive the rib when the cover is closed, the walls of the secured within the groove and adapted to bearupon the rib projecting into the cover.
V groove being-parallel and the walls of the In testimony that I'claim the" foregoing as Y 1 my own, I have hereto affixed mysignature .in the presence of twowitnesses. IVILLIAM A; SOMMERHOF. Witnesses: u .7
