Be it known that l, PIERRE DoNoN, a citizen of the French Republic., residing at 139-141 Rue Saussure, Paris, France, have invented certain new and useful Improve-f ments in Change-Speed Devices, of which the following is aspecification.
This invention relates' to a change-speed device with two combinations wherein a lodouble-faced clutch member is keyed to the main actuated shaft between two gear wheelsL of different diameters mounted loose on the said'shaft. A common gearwheel continually drives both the said gear wheel, 1n one case through an intermediate pinion and in the other case by direct drive. This group readily. mounted at the outgoing end of an" ordinary change-speed device having for instance four or six speeds, and" is in this case actuated either vby a pinion keyed to the outgoing shaft of the boXand directly engaging the two loose gear wheels ofthe said'device, or bythe reversingfpinion of thesaid gear according to this .inventionis especially advantageous for use upon portable power plants ofthe tractor type which are required to operate yat full load andreduced speedfat the working yard or at a'railway station', or the like, but on the other hand are required to travel rapidly fromf'onefwo-rking point' to anothereither separately or witha light trailer load. f
Two forms of construction ofv th'einven tion as applied to atractor ofthe said type -are shown by way of erlam'pleiin the accompanying' drawings, wherein?.` *t l Fig. l is a view, partly in `section and partly in elevation of a changelspeed device for two speeds actuated'byy a/spur gear of any suitablefkind. f
Figs. 2 and 3 are detail views showing in separate dispositionithe manner in which the shifting device moves one or the other of the two pinions which engage theclutch member. i
box; It providesffor a'twofold usev of the` range of speeds furnished by the'said boX, andfor this reason thechange-speed device Fig. L1` is aiviewpartly in section rand l partly `in elevation kshowing the change-y speed device for two speeds disposedk at the end of a irst change-,speed box and controlled by the reversing pinion of thel latter change-speed box, and Fig. 5 is a view partly further formr tion. y y
The casing 1 containing the whole changespeed device is traversed bythe main actu'- ated shaft 2 which is for instance terminated of construction ofy the inven- .in section and partly in elevation showingA a at either end byy a sprocket wheel which drives respectively by chain one of the axles f of the power tractor. 'To the shaft 2 within the casing is keyed a clutch member 3 having on each side the internal gear teeth 4 and 5. Upon the shaft 2, on either side of the clutch member 3, are loosely mounted two gear wheelsof considerably different diameters 6, 7. The large diameter gear wheel '6 is provided withthe spur gear teeth 8 and also with a second set of spur gearteeth 9? y adapted to engage the internal teeth dof',- the clutch member This second setcf "teeth is shown in dottedlines in Fig. 1, the
section in this figure being taken between twoteeth of thesaid set, and this is'also shown in Fig. 4. The gear wheel`7 may en-y gage witlrthe teeth 4 ofthe'clutch member 3, or with a gear wheel 10 which `is loosely' mounted upon two ball bearings 11 about a portion of shaft 12 secured within the casing 1. The gear wheels 6 and 10 are both con# stantly actuated by a shaft 14 drivenby the engine in any suitable manner.
The casing 1 is'alsotraversed by a `rod 15 which may be moved by means of a' suitable device in the sense of one or the other of ythe arrows 16, 17. The said rodhas mounted thereon by hubs securedby bolts two control forks 18, 19.` rThe fork 18, Figs. 1 and 3, actuates the gear wheel 6 by engaging a groove 2O of the hub 21. The' fork 19, Figs. l and 2, has a double form yand ac-tuates both the gear wheel 7 and the intermediate gear wheel 10, engaging respectively the ' circular grooves 22, 23 of the said gear wheels.
kThe operation of the device is as follows: The gear wheel l'constantly drives the gear wheels .6, 10 and the latter constantlyy drives the gear wheel. By moving the rod 15 of the forks in the proper direction, the gear wheels 6 or 7 are' caused to `engage they clutch device 3. The actuated shaft 2 having secured thereto the Clutch device 3 is thereby driven at one or the other of the speeds corresponding to the diameters of the gear wheels 6, 7. The reversal of rotation of the shaft 2 is effected by the reversal of the motion of the gear wheel 13.
Fig. 4 represents a changespeed box of this character disposed after a first changespeed box. In this case the gear wheels 6, l0 are driven by a gear wheel 24 secured to a. shaft 25 by means of the vfluted portions 26 and slidable on the said shaft. The gea-r wheel 24 has formed therein a circular groove 27 engaging al fork 28 controlled by a leverv 29 whereby the gear wheel 24 is caused to slide upon the shaft 25. On the latter shaft and on either side of the wheel 24 are loosely mounted two symmetrical bevel gears 32, 33 which are constantly engaged by the bevel teeth with a bevel pinion, not shown, situated perpendicular to the .plane of the figure, and mounted on the /outgoing shaft of the first change-speed box. The wheels 32,33 are thus constantly driven in the contrary' sense. These two lwheels are each provided with internal teeth of spur type adapted to engage the gear wheel 24. According to the engagement of one or the other of the wheels 32, 33 with the gear wheel 24, the latter will be rotated in one sense or the other, and will drive in the-same sense the main Aactuated shaft 2. The wholedevice is mounted upon two ballbearings 30 and 31 situated atk the ends of the shaft 25. In the form of -construction shown in Fig. 4, two brakedrums 34, 35 are secured at the ends of the shaft 25 and are in a const-ant mechanical relationwith the main actuated shaft.
The form of construction above set forth has the lfollowing drawbacks: f
ll. The intermediate actuating pinion is mounted on a portionof shaft in overhang position and therefore operating under defective conditions.
2. The said clutch member is provided with two sets of internal teeth whereof one Aset adjacent the sleeve used for the mounting upon the main actuatedshaft is difficult to construct by machine.
The form of construction shown in Fig.
5 is exempt from the above-mentioned draw-y backs.. `The common drivingvvheel Aactuates thetwo ear wheels of different diameters mounted oose on the-main actuated shaft,
i the ends thereof. The diameters and the ables the construction of a clutch memberV having a single set of internal teeth on the sidey oppositethe said sleeve, and an external set of teeth. At the same time, the width of the whole apparatus can be reduced in a considerable degree.
Within the casing 36 is keyed to the main actuated shaft 37 the clutch member conStituted ofal double-faced .disk 38' having a set of internal teeth 39 and a set of external teeth 40. On either side of the clutch member 38 are loosely mounted on the shaft 37 the two gear wheels 4l and 42 of diffe-rent diameters, controlled respectively by the forks 43, 44 and. adapted to-separately engage one or the other of the sets of teeth of the clutch member 3S. The gear wheel 41 engages a gear wheel 45 and the gear wheel 42 engages aV gear wheel 46 pertaining to a set of gear wheels keyed to the shaft 47 which rotates inthe bearings 48 provided in the casing 36 through the intermediary of the ball-bearings 49.
The gear wheel 46 engages the actuating pinion 50 yof the device, the latter being keyed to the shaft 5l which is driven byany suitable motor or engine or extends outwardly of another change-speed box which is in turn connected with any suitable motor or engine. The gearwheels 50 and 42 have for instance the same number of teeth, and it is no longer necessary, as in the form of construction shown in Fig. l, that there shall be a. great difference in the diameters of the gear wheels 4l and 42, inasmuch as there is provided a two fold speed reduction, firstly between the gearing 50 and 46 and secondly between the gearing 45 and 41.
This combination of two change-speed d'evices mounted in series is especially advantageous for portable power plants of -the tractor type. It enables the use of the four or six speeds of the first change-speed box in two differentways, firstly by a method of operating at speeds of the order of 12 kilometres an hour. for instance, for full load working at the place of use, and secondly by a method of operating at speeds of the order of 40 kilometres an hour yfor travel from one working point to. the other and for transportation of Workmen.
