To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Jnssn DrrsoN and ARTHUR E. Pnrnns, citizens of the United States, and residents of Littleton, county of Arapaho state of Colorado, have invented a certain Pedestal Punch, of which the following is a specification, accompanied by drawings. f
This invention relates to machines for punching hollow drill steels and similar articles, but more particularly to a pedestal punch in which the punching mechanism is mounted at one side of a pedestal or other support and the clampingmechanism for clamping the hollow article is mounted at the other side of the pedestal, although my improved clamping mechanism is capable of use in other arrangements, and not necessarily with the particular form of punching no mechanism shown herein, the details of which punching mechanism are disclosed in our co-pending joint application, Serial No. 435,476, filed January 6, 1921. The objects of the present invention are to secure a simple and eflicient pedestal punch combining punching mechanism and clamping mechanism capable of being readily assembled and disassembled, and mounted on a pedestal with few parts which do not readily get out of order under frequent and hard usage. Another object is to produce a clamping mechanism capable of aligning and centering various sizes of drill steels Within its range and is at the same time quick in operation, both in gripping and releasing the steel and holds equally rigidly in both directions;
Our application is shown in one of its preferred forms in the accompanying drawings in whichf Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in longitudinal section of a machine embodying the invention;

Referring to the drawings, the pedestal A is provided with the head B having a bore 1921. Serial No. 474,888.
through which a guide bar 0 is adapted to be passed horizontally and held in position by means of the tightening bolt-s D. The guide bar C forms a ready and convenient common support and guide for both the fluid actuated punching mechanism E preferably slidable upon one projecting portion of the guide bar and the fluid actuated clamping mechanism F adapted to be suit-v ably secured to the opposite projecting porwhich the guide bar (1 passes, and afluid' pressure cylinder L preferably of the hammer type may be provided with a hammer piston (not shown) adapted to impart blows of impact to the punch H for driving it into the article to be punched. j
The punching mechanism may be moved back and forth on the guide bar G in any suitable manner as for instance by means of the hand operating lever O pivoted at P on the pedestal A and connected to the lug Q on the casing of the punchingmechanism by means of the link or red R, pivoted to the lever O at the point S. The connecting rod B; may be provided with the collarvT and a cushioning spring U is arranged between said collar and a washer V bearing against the lug Q. Another cushioning spring W is arranged between the washer X and an adjusting nut Y on the screw threaded end 7:: of the connecting rod. By manipulating the hand lever O the punching mechanism E may be pulled toward the article to be punched and pushed away from the article when the punching operation is completed.
The guide bar C is preferably provided with a longitudinal groove a and the casing is provided with a key or feather 12 secured thereto by means of the screws 0 so that as the punching mechanism is moved forwardly and backwardly, the key I) maintains the punching 7 shown in thisin'stance as a valve of the poppet type, having a valve stemgn' back head (Z is provided with the supply.

3. A machine for punching hollow drill steels and similar articles, comprising a support, clamping mechanism mounted on said support and consisting of a vise head, jaw levers pivoted on said vise head, a cylinder and fluid actuated piston for said vise head, lift levers operatively connecting said piston and jaw levers, means for controlling the operation of the piston, and punching mechanism mounted on the support and movable to and from the clamping mechanism.
