The lower ends of the shafts 33 are provided with heads 36 having upon their 'l'ower faces valve engaging lements 37 adapted to engage in the sockets formed in the valve for engagement with a grinding tbol. The upperend of each of the shafts v33 is externally screw-threaded and is further providedjwith a bore 40 opening throngli' such upper end which is screw-threaded. A. head 38 is provided having a threaded bore in its lower end engaging the upper end of the ste-m 'and an openin'g formed in its upper end for the reception of a set screw 39 engaging in the bore 10 of the stem. This head may be adjusted upon the stem and "locked in adjusted positionby mesmer- =the set screw for a purpose presently to appear. Between the lower' guide plate and the upper face of the head 361a spring 3341s disposed which ,surroundsthe shaft 33 and which forces the same downwardly so as to normally maintain the upper end 35 of the slot 34 in engagement with the pin 35. Slidably and rotatably mounted in the bearing plates '17 and 19' is a shaft 41 having formed thereon worms 4L2 engaging the pinion's 31. The end portion of the shaft 40 41 projects into the gearbox and has secured thereto within the gear hox'a pinion 43 and a collar 4A having a yoke receiving groove 15, the collar 44in the. present instance being shown as formed integrally 45 the pinion 43. Since the valve is continually in movement, the valve will be rotated while held from its seat and will be engaged 'with the seat at a new spot and the. valve grind- 7 ing compound accordingly shifted and prevented from bunching and pocketing. As the cam leaves the rocker arm, the same is released permitting the shaft 33 tov move down- Wardly smartly under the action of spring 33, reseating the valve with a snap. action similar to the action of the valve in seating during operation of the engine. The extent or strength of the blow applied by the valve in engaging its seat may be regulated by adjusting the head 38 so as to shorten the length of movement of the shaft 33 under influence of the cam 53. In actual use it has been found that the application of the snap action inreturning the valves to their seats results in a much more perfectly ground seat than is possible in the ordinary manner of valve grinding where the valve is permitted to leave its seat and simply return toits seat by pressure or'the weight of the tool with which the grinding is being done. Furthermore.v since a plurality of.
valves may be simultaneously ground and similar movements are applied to each thereof. all of the valves'will be ground in approximately the same length of 'time,"resulting in the completion of the valve grinding operation for the number of valves which the machine is adapted to grind, four in the present instance, in the same time that it would ordinarily require to grind a single valve. 7
While the construction hereinbefore described and illustrated is particularly adapted for use with a particular style of engine, the principledisclosed is applicable to grinding the valves ofpra'ctica'lly'all engines ,where the valves. areseated jdirectly'in either the head or cylinder blockof an engine h-av ing a' removable head. It is believed tobe obvious thata construction such ashere'in 9 before described will result in a material saving of'tim'e ingrinding the valves and at the same time the valves will be ground with a mechanical precision impossible where hand -operated machines are= .em- 'ployed. It will furthermore be obvious that the construction hereinbefore described and" shown in the accompanyingdraw'ings is capable of many changes and modifications withoutmaterially departing from the spirit j of my invention, and I' accordingly-do not cept as hereinafter claimed.

3. In valve grinding mechanism, a. shaft provided with a valve engaging head, a pinion on said shaft, a worm engaging said pinion, a second shaft, drive gearing 'connecting said shaft and said worm, and means operated from said second. shaft for reciproeating said worm.
