Our invention relates to improvements in washing machines, and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object "of our invention is to provide a washing machine embodying means for causin the circulation therethrough of a cleanslng fluid to occasion a continuous flow of the cleansing fluid through articles disposed within an oscillatory receptacle.
A further obj ect of our invention is to provide a device of the type described that has means for draining the liquid compartment thereof during the operation of the device so that the character of the cleansing fluid may be changed at will and the fluids discharged from the liquid compartment conducted to any adjacent place selected.
A fuither'bbject of our invention is to provide a device of thetype described having a liquid-tight compartment, an oscillatory cylinder mounted therein, means for drawing a cleansing fluid, from the liquid compartment and for conducting the same selectively to the liquid compartment again or for. discharging it, and means for oscillating the cylinder. 1
A further object of our invention is to provide a device capable of being used to attain the objects set forth in the foregoing and being provided with means operable to occasion the operation of the means for causing a circulation of the cleansing fluid without oscillating the cylinder in which the articles to be cleaned are disposed and for oscillating the cylinder without operating the means for drawing the cleansing liquid from the liquid compartment.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Our invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, in which- 1 Figure 1 is aside elevation of the device,
portions thereof being broken away and other portions being shown in section, and
Figure-2 is a View similar to Figure 1 and at right angles thereto.
In carrying out our invention, we provide a casing 1 supported by legs 2 that .may be formed integrally therewith. The casing 1 may be made of any suitable material, preferably of relatively light sheet metal, and is formed with an opening at its upper end having a closure therefor as is usual in devices of this character, and with a bottom 3. A substantially semi-cylindrical partition 1 is arranged within the casing 1 as shown to provide an upper compartment 5 and a lower compartment 6. The compartment 5 has as sides three of the inner side walls of the casing 1 but as the partition 4 terminates short of the fourth side of the casing 1, a vertical partition 14 is joined thereto and extends from the bottom 3' to the upper end of the casing 1; thereby providing a side compartment 13 that is closed from the lower compartment 6. Both the semi-cylindrical partition 4 and the vertical partition 14 are secured to the contiguous walls of the casing 1 and to one another, in any suitable manner. as by welding, to make the compartment 5 liquid-tight.
Within the lower part of the compartment 13 is disposed a motor 7 having a drive shaft with its end portions 8 and 8' projecting vide a worm 11 and has its remote endjournaled' in a bracket bearing 12. The worm 11 is arranged to drive a worm gear 15 that is keyed to' a stub shaft 16 that is journaled in a bracket bearing 17. The latter is secured to the partition lby bolts 18, or the like.
Projecting from the worm gear 15 is a crank pin 19 to which is attached a connect.- ing-rod 2 0 which is in turn pivotally connected at 21 with a rocker arm 22. The latter is fashioned with an-integral collar or hub 23 that is rigidly mounted on a final drive shaft 24:. The final drive shaft 24 is journaled in a bracket bearing 25 that is secured by bolts 26 or. the like totheinner wall of the adjacent side of the casing 1.
A clutch member 27 of ordinary construction is feathered to the shaft 24 adjacent to tion relatively to the shaft 24 by its engagement with the usual feather (not shown) on the shaft 24. The latter is journaled in a bearing 32 that is secured within an opening 33 through the partition 14 and is formed with a central opening 34 through which the shaft 29 projects. The tubular journal 31 is formed with a flange 35 that is firmly fastened by any suitable means, none' being shown, to the side wall of a cylinder or receptacle 36 that is adapted to receive the articles to be cleansed.
The cylinder 36 is arranged for oscillatory movement about the axis of the shaft 29 and that of a hollow shaft or tube 37. The latter is of course axially alined with the shaft 29 and projects within the compartment 5 through an opening 38 in the wall of the casing 1. It communicates exteriorly of the casing 1 with a three-way valve 39 which is of any suitable known construction. A tubular 'ournal 40 that houses the inner portion of t e tube 37 and is concentric therewith is rigidly secured to the contiguous inner wall of the casin 1 and has mounted for rotation thereon a s eeve 41 having a flange 42 secured to the contiguous wall of the cylinder 36 by any suitable means, none being shown.
A conduit 43 communicatively connects the three-way valve 39 with a pump 44 that is disposed within the lower art of the compartment 13 and is preferably of the centrifugal type, although it may be of, any approved type of construction. The pump 44 also has an intake conduit 45 connecting exteriorly of the casing 1- with a valve 46 that is connected by a pipe 47 with the liquid-tight compartment 5 at the bottom thereof. The valve 46 is operable at will to control the passage of a liquid from the compartment 5 to the pump 44.
The pump is provided with an operating shaft 48 that is connected by a universal can be conveniently manipulated and the pump 44 operated or brought to a stop as desired at any time when the motor 7 1s in operation. The articles to be cleansed are placed within the cylinder 36 and the liquid compartment 5 is then filled in any suitable manner, as by means of a hose gnot shown) connected with a source of supp y, to a desired level with a cleansing fluid so that the cylinder 36 is also partly filled with the cleaning fluid which will. pass freely the'reinto through the perfo rations 55. It is obvious that when the motor 7 is actuated in an ordinary manner and the clutch member 27 is moved into engagement with the clutch member 28 the cylinder 36 will be oscillated and the articles therein will be relatively displaced and tumbled back and forth. The handle 52 may then be operated at will to start the pump 44 and upon actuation of the latter, the
cleansing liquid is continuously drawn from the' compartment 5 into the pump 44 and forced therefrom through the conduit 43. The three-Way valve 39 can then be operated by means of a handle 57 to occasion the passage of the cleansing liquid through the hollow shaft 37 into the cylinder 36 again and the circulation of the cleansing liquid in the manner outlined may be continued until the desired result has been obtained.

' The three-way valve 39 can also be operated to occasion the passage of the cleansing liquid from the conduit 43 through a discharge pipe that may extend to any place desired or be adapted for connection with any suitable liquid conducting means, as for instance, a waste pipe (not shown) so that the liquid compartment 5 can be drained with the necessity for baling the liquid therefrom, as is the case with many ordinary devices, or for permitting the liquid to drop upon a floor to pass therealong to a drain pipe leading to a sewer, or the like, as is usually the case, obviated. It will thus be seen that articles can be cleansed effectively and expeditiously when a device embodying our invention is used.
Ve claim:
1. In a washing machine of the character described, a casing having parallel end walls, an article holding receptacle disposed in said casing and having its end walls substantially parallel to the end walls of said casing, a bearing sleeve on one end wall of said receptacle, the bore of said bearing sleeve being substantially aligned with an opening provided through said end wall of said receptacle, a tubular journal carried by the wall of said casing adjacent the bearing sleeve and disposed partially within the latter, a conduit extending through the bore of said journal substantially flush with the inner wall of said receptacle for introducing a liquid into the receptacle, and bearing means carried by the opposite end wall of said receptacle and the adjacent Wall of said casing for rotatably supporting that end of said receptacle in said casing.
2. A washing machine comprising a casing having two opposite walls therein substantially vertical and parallel, an article holding receptacle disposed in said casing and having two opposite vertical end walls, a bearing sleeve supported on one of said end walls of said receptacle, the bore of said bearing sleeve being substantially aligned with an opening provided through said end wall of said receptacle, a tubular journal carried by the end wall of said casing adjacent to said bearing sleeve and disposed partially in the latter, said last named journal being fashioned with a flange contacting the end of said bearing sleeve, a conduit extending through the bore of said journal substantially flush with the inner wall of the receptacle for introducing a liquid into the latter.
