citizeno'lithe United States, and a resident of Streator, inthe countyof La Salle and State of Illinois, have invented a new and permitting the use of a gate valve for the control of thewater, which valve provides a free way flow of water-to the standpipe.
A further object of my invention .is to provide a water controlling device that is thoroughly practical" i:'or the purpose intended and not likely to get out of order easily. I
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointedout in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my water con-- trolling device,

In carrying out my invention, I make use of a standard gate valve 1, having an elongated spindle 2. The valve 1 is connected to a water main 3 at one of its portsand to a discharge main 4 at its other port. Supported above the valve 1 by uprights 5 is a cylinder 6 having its ends. closed by means of plates 7 and 8. The plates 7 and 8 are held in closed engagement with the cylinder 6by the use of tie rods 9, making the cylinder water tight. Within the cylinder, 6 and secured to the valve stem 2 is a piston.

From the foregoing description. of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be. readily understood. The device,.
as; shown in Fig. 1, is shut oil and the valves are in the position as indicated in Fig. 5.
When it is desired to turn on the flow of water in the spout 40, the operator moves the hand lever 39 in a downward direction.
This causes the lever 31 to assume the posivalve and'into the vent 23 at the lower part of the cylinder-6. The vent 27 at this time is closed andthe valve 20, is turned so as to permit any water that may be above the piston-10 in the cylinder to pass out through the vent 22 ando-ut of the discharge pipe 2-1. It will be seen, therefore, that water entering the vent 23 will cause the piston 10 to rise, carrying with it the valve stem 2 and thus open the gate valve. The spring 14 at, this, time is compressed.
To shut off the water, the lever 39 is moved back to they position shown in Fig. 1., The valves 20, 2.1 and 28 are thus moved to the position shown in Fig. 5. With the valves 20, 21 and 28 in this position, water in the cylinder 6 below the piston 10 will be discharged through the vent 2-3 and through the discharge port 44 of the valve 21. Water will also be discharged from, below the piston 10 through the vent 27 of the valve 29-, thus providing a double discharge below the piston while the gate valve is being closed. The valve 1 is closed by means of water entering the upper part of the cylinder 6 through the valve 20 and by means oi? the spring 14: bearing down upon the rod 13, which rod is at all times in close engagementwith the piston 10.
I claim:
The combination with a gate valve having avalve stem, a water main connected with the valve, and aspring for exerting a downward pressure upon said valve stem to yieldably close said valve, of a cylinder disposed adjacent to said valve, 2. piston within said cylinder, a rod connecting said piston with said valve stem, a valve having three ports, one port'eonnected with said water main, another communicating with the interior of said piston at its upper end, and the third connected with a discharge pipe, a second valve having three ports, thev first port being connected with said water main,
the second port communicating with said cylinder at its lower end, and the third port communicating with said discharge pipe, a third valve having one port communicating with the lower end o-f'said cylinder, and the others with a discharge pipe, and means for actuating said valves: simultaneously, whereby water may enter from said main into the. upper portion of said cylinders" to cause said piston to move downwardly, and
water within said cylinder may bedischarged through the tworemaining valves associated with the lower end of the cylinder to cause said gate valve to close.
