UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIOE.
HORACE WHEELER, OE BURLINGTON, VERMONT.
IMPROVEMENT IN CEMENTS FOR SLATE ROOFING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,705, dated Dcccmbcr 16, 1873; apllication filed September 8,1 3.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HORACE WHEELER, of
Burlington, inthe county ofAddisou and in the' `and linseed-oil, and used with a paper or other foundation, and blocks or slabs of slate, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will non describe it, referring to the annexed drawing, which represents a perspective view of a piece of rooting laid with my cement. y
In laying the roof with my cement, the roof should be well boarded, and covered with tarred paper, 2, or other suitable foundation.
The cement is composed of ground clay, ground plaster-ofparis, and ground slate, in equal proportions, mixed with coal-tar 5 after which sufficient linseed-oil is added to cause the cement to have a certain amount of elasticity, so that it can be applied with a stiff brush or trowel.
This cement is spread over the foundation 2, and then the blocks or slabs l of slate are laid on the cement, as shown, and the crevices between the slabs are filled with cement.
rIhe cement made of the above ingredients will not crack or warp by the effect ofthe sun. If the linseed-oil was omitted, the cement s would soon crack; but, by the addition of the oil, the cement is rendered elastic and nnpervious to the weather.
I do not, broadly, claim a roofing formed by rst applying a layer of felt or paper, and cementing thereto blocks of slate; but
VhatI do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The roong-cement composed of ground clay, ground plaster-paris, ground slate, coaltar, and linseed-oil, and used Awith a paper or other foundation, and blocks or slabs of slate, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 30th day of August, 1873.
i .HORACE VHEELER.
