Description

T. RWE @c T. RWE.
Shutter-Workers.
Patented Dec.16,187-3..
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ATHOMAS ROWE AND CHARLES T. ROWE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
' IMPROVEMENT IN sHuTTER-woRKERs.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,688, dated December 16, 1873; application filed November 13, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, THOMAS RoWE and CHARLES T. ROWE, both of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shutter-Torkers and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which drawing- Figure l represents a horizontal section of our invention, the shutter being partially open.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts. This invention relates to a shutter-worker, and consists in the combination of a collared worm-shaft, for operating the pinion of a shut ter-worker, with a two-part case, the lower v portion of which is cast with lugs or auxiliary a a. Said case is provided at one end with a flange, b, furnished with holes to admit screws c c, Fig. l, by means of which the same can be fastened to the edge of the windowframe, as indicated in the drawing. At or near its front end, the case A is provided with lugs or auxiliary feet el, which are intended to catch in cavities made to receive them in the window-sill, so that by the combined action of the screws c c and these lugs or feet the case is iirmly retained in position, and not liable to work loose by the strain to which its fastenings are subjected in working a shutter. The case A forms the bearings for a shaft, C, on which is secured a worm, e, and this worm gears in ,a worin-wheel, j', mounted on a vertical shaft, g, that extends up through the cover of the case, and on the upper end of which is firmly secured a lever, D. This lever is provided with a slot, h, which engages with a pin projecting from the bottom edge of the shutter, so that by turning the worin-shaft C, the shutter is opened or closed, and that the shutter can be retained in any intermediate position. The shaft O is provided with a groove, c', that catches into a cavity or box, j, in the case, and over the edge of this cavity, while a projection, k, on the cover B, catches lin said groove, thus preventing the shaft O from moving in the direction of its axis. `The outer end of said shaft rests loosely in a box, Z, formed by the case and cover, and by these means the worm-shaft is Ileft free to any changes which may be produced in the case or in the shaft by different temperatures in summer and winter, and the mechanism works well throughout the whole year. This device is exceedingly simple and cheap in its construction, it is not liable to get out of order; it is lrmly retained in position; and it serves to operate a shutter without opening the window.
Vhat we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the collared worin-shaft C, for operating the pinion of a shutter-Worker, with the two-part case A B, of which the lower portion A is cast with lugs or auxiliary feet d, and a journal-seat, l, formed upon the inside wall for loosely supporting the journal of the wornrshat't, while the upper part B has a depending ilan ge for ttin g Within the case and resting upon the journals to retain them in position, all substantially as described and shown, for the purpose set forth.
