Description

l. E. HAMMOND.
Hinged-Masts for Vessels.
UNITED STATES PATENT QEEIGEo JOB E. HAMMOND, OF NEW BEDFORD, MASS., ASSIGN OR OF TVVO-THIRDS HIS RIGHT TO DAREUS P. GARDNER AND EBEN PIERCE, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN HINGED MASTS FOR VESSELS.
Speciicaion forming part of Letters Patent N0. 145,648, dated December 16, 1873; application filed December 4, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, JOB E. HAMMOND, of New Bedford, in the county of Bristol, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Boats, of which the following is a specication:
My invention relates to the hinging of th masts of boats above the deck. The object of my invention is ease in raising and lowering the masts of boats, either With the sails set or furled.
Figure l is a perspective view of my inventionapplied to the mast of a boat. Fig. 2 is an elevation with mast erect.
Fig. 1, A1- is a boat; B', its mast; C1, a hinge, D1, fall El, a tackle-block 5 f f j" chain-braces, which brace and secure the mast when raised.
Fig. 2, A2, the boat; B, the mast; C2, the hinge; D2, the fall; E2, the tackle-block.
The masts of boats being hinged nigh the deck, as seen in Fig. l, its operation may be noted. By pulling the fall with one hand, and raising the mast with the other hand, it will be seen that it will render the task of stepping 7 the mast comparatively easy. When the mast is raised perpendicular, it is secured by the chain-braces. When it is desirable to lower the mast, the chain-brace is liberated and the fall slackened.
That I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A boats mast divided just above the deck into two parts, When arranged With hinged ferrules C O2, and pins and chain-braces f f j", all combined and operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
JOB E. HAMMOND.
