OMAR JACOB I-IOTALING, OF EAST O'BANGE, NEW JERSEY.
DISPLAY RACK.
Application filed April 27, 1922.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OMAR J. HOTALING, a citizen ofthe United States, and a resident of East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Display Rack, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to display racks which are particularly designed for holding newspapers, magazines or periodicals in display position at news stands.
As an object the invention contemplates an extremely simple and inexpensive display rack which embodies a plurality of correlated elements which are adjustable relative to each other to vary the size of the receiving pockets or the articles to be displayed.
As a further object the invention contemplates a display rack of the character described in which the pocket forming elements are capable of being swung to a collapsed or nested position whereby the rack in its entirety will occupy a minimum amount of space when not in use and when it is desirable to transport the same.
With the above recited and other objects in View, the invention resides in the novel construction set forth in the following specification, particularly pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it being understood that the right is reserved to embodiments other than those actually illustrated herein to the full extent indicated by the general meaning of the terms in which the claims are expressed.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of a display rack constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view there through taken approximately on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail fragmentary view.
Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view therethrough taken approximately on the line 45-4 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, the rack embodies a support ing frame which consists of parallel side rails 10 which are connected together by transverse end bars 11. The pocket forming elements consist of a plurality of substam Serial No. 556,934.
with openings 15. in the opposite side rails 10 of the frame to receive the bolts 16 having nuts 17 threaded on their inner extremities for swingingly associating the members 12 with the frame. Each of the side arms 13 are provided with an arcuate rearwardly projecting offset 18 spaced from the eye 14 to register with and receive the shank of the bolt 16 of the next adjacent superposed member 12, which bolt serves as a guide and an additional support for the member 12 as well as a stop for limiting the outward swinging movement of the member due to the engagement of the bight 19 of the olfset therewith. When swung to their outermost position, as illustrated, the adjacent members 12 define a plurality of pockets 20 which are adapted to receive therebetween the newspapers, magazines, periodicals, or other articles of this character. When swung to their innermost positions, as illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 2, the members 12 nest one above the other to dispose the same in a plane substantially parallel to the forward edge of the side rails to reduce the thickness of the entire rack to a minimum for storage or transportation. By loosening the nuts 17, the members 12 may be disposed at various relative angular positions to increase or decrease the size of the pockets 2O defined therebetween, the nuts being tightened to retain the members 12 in their adjusted position.
From the foregoing it will thus be observed that the bolts 16 in each instance, except the extreme upper and lowermost ones, serve both as a pivot and as a guide and stop for adjacent members 12. It is, of course, understood and appreciated that any number of the members 12 may be em ployed and that no restriction or limitation as to the construction of the frame is intended. The open end of the oflsets 18 at their juncture with the side arms 13 permits of a limited flexing of the members. 12 relative to each other.
I claim:
1. A display rack including a plurality of inverted Ushaped members having the free lower extremities of the side legs pivot ally connected in superposed relation with a support. the side legs having rearwardly disposed 'arcuate offsets concentric to the pivotal connection of the legs, said offsets adapted to coact and receive the pivot of the next adjacent superposed member for guiding and bracing said member and for limiting the outward swinging movement of the same whereby said members when in angularly disposed relation define therebetween receiving pockets.
2. A display rack embodying spaced parallel supporting elements, a plurality of inverted U-shaped members having pivotal connection with and disposed between the supporting elements in superposed relation, and means coacting respectively with the pivotal connection of each member and with the member above said pivots for retaining the same in angularly adjusted positions.
3. A display rack embodying spaced par-- allel supporting elements, a plurality of inverted U-shaped members having the free lower extremities of their side legs pivotally nected at their lower extremities in superposed relation on a support, means on each element coacting with the pivotal connection of the next adjacent superposed element for guiding said element in its movement and limiting theoutward angular disposition of the same, and means coacting with said pivotal connections for retaining said elements in their adjusted position.
OMAR JACOB HOTALING.
