nnvrcn non DRAWING THE nnns or A BAND on BALE TIETOGETHER.
Application filed .April 8, 1922. g Serial No. 550,655. '1
Toallwhontit mayconcem; i h
Be it known that I, ROBERT L. Honsnnr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Memphis, in the county of Shelby andState of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements iniDevices for Drawing the Ends of a Band or Bale Tie Together, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a device for drawing the ends of a band or bale tie together, and has for its object the provision of simple and eflicient means for drawing the ends of a band or bale tie 7 together, so that they can be fastened by an ordinary buckle.
Another object of the invention is the construction of a simple and efiicient device for fastening a band or bale tie upon a bale of cotton, or the like, by drawing the ends of the band close together and then, while in this taut or drawn condition, placing a' fastening device on the ends, whereupon the drawing device will be removed from the bale of cotton.
With these and other objects in View, my invention comprises certain novel combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a view, in elevation, of a bale of cotton showing my device in position thereon, for drawing the ends of a band or bale tie together.
Figure 2 isa top plan view of my device showing the same in the position that the parts are placed or assembled when the ends of the band are brought together, with the buckle, commonly known as an arrow buckle, in place thereon.
Figure 3 is a front view of the device shown in Fig. 2, with the handle of the screw removed.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary, perspective view of the device.
Figure 5 is a plan view showing the ends of the band or bale tie in position upon the arrow buckle.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates abale of cotton around which is placed the band or bale tie 2; this band can be made of any material, such as a strip My drawing PATEN F CE-12f of flat metal or a wire, as the operator 'desires. II. willdesignatethi's eler'nent 2 as a band throughoutthe specification and claim, using the word ban-d -1n a broad sense.'- v I l of the band 2 together, comprises two elements or blocks 3'; each block 3, includes a body 4, from one side of which body t 6X: tends a tapering flange or finv 5. In, the inner portion of the fin 5 I form a bucklereceiving slot 6. When the two blocks 3 are placed upon a bale 1 screw 7 is threaded through the bodies 4, and byoperating handle 8, of screw 7, the blocks may be brought together, Fig. 2, or spread apart, Fig. 1. It is to be noted that to accomplish this function the screw 7 is providedwith the usual right and left threads. 1
device, fori'bring'ing .the. ends .7
To keep the cloth or covering of the bale are secured together (Fig. 2), I place a flat protecting plate 9,under the blocks; plate 9 is fastened to one of the blocks by chain 10, and therefore, cannot be accidentally misplaced or lost. 1 I Y The ends 2*, of the band 2,. are looped around the fins 5 next to bodies 4, with the extreme loose end 2 (Fig. 3) underneath; consequently, as the blocks are screwed together, the tautness of theband will cause the ends 2 to tightly press against the bale 1, as well asplate 9, preventing displacement of the looped ends 2 from off the fins prior to the placing of the buckle 10, in the slots 6 andupon the looped ends 2. As seen in Fig. 3, the looped ends are in engagement and the mouth of the buckle 1O can be slipped over these engaging portions and then turned at right angles, with the ends of the bands securely placed upon the buckle, whereupon screw 7 can be rotated to cause the blocks 3 to move apart, and then the drawing moved off the bale.
Itris to be noted that I have provided a 2 100 device can bequickly rei bodiment of my invention, and have illustrated the same in the accompanying drawings, certain minor changes or alterations may appear to one skilled in the art to provided along one side with an outwardlyextending flange for passing through a loop 15 formed at the end of a bale strap with the free end portion of the -stra beneath the flange, the flange being. provided, with a re cess opening through its outer side edge face and inner end face whereby a fastener clip for the ends of the strap may be passed into the recesses of theflanges of said blocks f and engaged with the loops of the strap, and means for retaining the blocks in end to end relation to each other and moving the blocks towards and away from each other. 1
In testimony whereof I'hereunto affix my signature.
