DIAPHRAGM SWITCH.
Application filed July 11, 1919. Serial No. 310,971.
I To all who) if may concern. in the Casing is operated by the pressure Be it known that I, (11mins Q i lnuo'r-ri a cell in the manner hereinafter described. citizen of the United States, residing at he pressure cell 3 is made up of a metallic littstield. county of Berkshire, State of cup (3 and a diaphragm 7 which is of an elaslllassaclnmetts, have invented certain new tic metal, preferably pllOS])llOY-blOIlZB. It 66 and useful lrnprovtmcnls in Diaphragm will be seen from the drawing that the Switches. of which the following is a spcciperipheral portion 8 of'the diaphragm is fi m I spun to extend over the flange 9 of the cup 6 'lllv invention relates to pressure cells, and around the outside surface thereof. and has for its object the provision of an im- Since the center of the diaphragm must have 65 proved type that will be simple and rugged a spring temper, and since phosphor-bronze in construction "and at the same time thorwill not spin if it is spring-tempered, it is oughly reliable and efficient necessary to anneal the peripheral portion of More specifically, my invention relates to the diaphragm bet'ore spinning itwhile the the type of )ressure cell provided with a centcris clamped between chill blocks, after 70 buckling diap n'agrm that is actuated by the which the center is dished by being struck change of pressure Within the cell. lleretowith a suitable die. The diaphragm havfore one of the great dilliculties oi this type ingg' thus been formed is placed over the meof cell has been to obtain a cell that would 'talliccup 6 and the peripheral portion ,8'of 29 rema in leakproof. Usually after the cell the diaphragm is oldered to the cup 6 on its 75 had been in operation a short time, the voiaoutside at '11), The soldered joint is theretile liquid therein would leak from the jointfore without the stressed area of thediabetween the cup or dished plate and the diaphragm and. the pressure cell does not dephragm. It was found' that the leaking: end upon the spinning "for-a leak-proof joint, While caused somewhat by the radial oint. The casing ii is provided with a 30 expansion of the diaphragm. as largely Fange l] which fits m'ert'he flange 9 and" due to the fact that it was within the stressed telescopes the cup (3 with the diaphragm area of the diaphragm. The object of my therebetwcen, as shown in the drawing, rig-- invention is to provide a pressure cell that idly securing the diaphragm and pre'yenting 30 overcomes this ditliculty. This I acoomany radial expansion thereof; The cup 6 is plish by extending the peripheral portiono'f provided with an opening 12 through which the diaphragm over the flange and outside a volatile liquid is poured into the pressure surface of the cell' cup and soldering cell. which is hermeticall sealed after the the diaphragm to the cup Without the area air has been exhausted therefrom. in any of stress of the diaphragm. To vpro. suitable manner. J vent any injury from the radial expansion It will readily be. understoorhthat an inof the diaphragm, I provide a frame or cascrease in the temperature of the fluid passing that closely fitsover the ii ange of the ing tln-o'ug-h the chamber 1 increases the' cup and the outside thereof, rigidly holding pressure of the cell, causing the'diaphragm 40 the diaphragm therehetween, Other objects 7 to buckle and operate the switch 4-, which and purposes of'my invention will appear is shonvn in closed position. Likewise a de-' in the course of the following s'pecificatiom crease in the temperature will permit the in which I have shown my invention ernclosing of the switch. Adjustment for (lif bodied in concrete form for purposes oit*il-' ferent temperature operations is made by lustration. using various mixtures of volatile liquids.
It-will thus be seen that have provided a pressure cell thathas a lealoproof joint without the stress area of the'dia'phragm,
. thus remedying one of the main defects in 59 Referring tot-he drawing; 1 is a chamber pressure cells as heretofore constructed, and 1 5 through which a fluid passes. Adjacent a which, is also provided'with means'prevent- Wall 2 of the chamber is the pressure. ing any injury-from the radial expansion of cell 3 which is affected by the change lhe diaphragm, resulting in a very simple,

. thereoi Will suggest cuppa buckling diaphrag embodied in concrete form and as operating in. a specific manner inacordance with'the revisions of the patent statutes, it should understood that I do not limit my inven tion thereto, since various modifications themselves to those skilled inthe art without departing from the spirit of my invention, set forth in the annexed claims.
What I claim as new and desire'to secure- Letters Patent of the United States, is,'- 1. A pressure cell comprising a metallic C11 to form a leak proof joint and a cover securing the diaphragm to the cup and removable without breaking said joint.
2. A pressure cell comprising a metallic soldered thereto proof joint, and a removable casing securing the diaphragm tc said cupso as to protect said joint from strains set up in said diaphragms. i j 3.,A- pressure cell comprising a metallic to form a leak .cup, a buckling diaphragm provided With'a cylindrical peripheral portion telescoping MP the scope of which is a buckling'diaphragm secured theretosaid peripheral portion having its edge secured tosaid cup m form a leak proof joint, and a removable casing fitting over the member thus formed clamping the peripheral portion of the diaphragm .between it and the metallic cup.
4. A pressure cell comprising a metallic cup, a buckling diaphragm provided with a cylindrical peripheral said cup, said periphera portion having its edge soldered to said cup and a removable casing fitting over the member thus formed, clamping the peripheral portion of the diaphragm between it and the metallic cup.
5. A pressure cell comprising a metallic cup, a buckling diaphragm extending over the flange of and over the outside surface of said cup and having its peripheral portion soldered to said outside surface, and a removable casing fitting-over the member thus formed, clamping the peripheral portion of thediaphrag n between it and the metallic cup.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this eighth day of duly, 19l9.
CHARLES c. ABBOTT.
