J.'BARR OPENER Filed April 4, 1922 INVEN'I'OR ATTORNEY lf atentecl May 15, 1923.
JAMES BARR, 0F BEAVER, PENNSYLVANIA.
OPENER.
Application filed April 4,
To arZZ w 7mm it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMEs BARR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beaver, in the county of Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Openers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an opener specially adapted for use in connection with shoe polish boxes and other receptacles provided with spaced flanges.
One of the main objects of the invention is to provide a device of the character stated of simple construction and operation which may be readily applied to a box of standard construction. A further object is to provide a. device of the character stated which may be readily produced and sold at small cost. Further objects will appear from the detailed description.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a front view of the device as applied;
Figure 2 is a section taken substantially on line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Figure 3 is a plan view of the device.
The device is intended to be used in connection with a box of standard type which includes a bottom member a and a cover I) which fits over an upper flange a of memher a. Member a is provided with an outer annular flange a which, when the box is closed, is spaced away from a similar flange 7) of cover 7). The flanges a" and 7) cooperate to provide an annular channel about the box A. This box is of a known type and the object of providing the spaced flanges c and h is to permit the insertion of an instrument between these flanges for torcing the cover off of the box.
In constructing my device I form a ring 1 of Wire of a suitable gage to fit snugly be- 1922. Serial No. 549,495.
tween flanges a" and b. At each end ring 1 is bent to provide an outwardly curved eye 2. These eyes fit through a retaining loop 3 which serves to positively prevent movement of eyes 2 away from each other. The ring 1 is of such size as to fit snugly about the box, as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2. With the ring in position, by 6X erting upward pressure on one of the loops 2 and downward pressure on the other loop, as indicated in Figure 1, cover 6 may be readily forced off of body portion or lower member a of the box. This device may be readily applied to a box of standard type and as the ring 1 and loop 3 can be quickly and easily formed by bending from wire of suitable gage, the device can be produced and sold at very small cost.
What I claim is 1. In combination with a box including a bottom member and a cover member fitting over said bottom member, the bottom member being provided with an outer annular flange and the cover member having an outer annular flange spaced above the flange of the bottom member, a ring fitting about the box between said flanges and provided at each end with an outwardly projecting pressure receiving element, and a loop fitting about said elements so as to positively limit movement of the same away from each other.
2. In a device of the character described, an annular member having its ends free and each provided with an outwardly projecting element curved inwardly toward said annular member, and a loop fitting about said elements and positively limiting movement of the same away from each other.
In testimony whereof I my signature.
JAMES BARR.
