UNITED STATES PATENT @rrrcn.
ALFRED GREENLEAF, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT lN CULINARY TONGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,564, dated December 16,1873; application filed September 20,1873.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALFRED GREENLEAF, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Culinary Tongs, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a top view of my improved culinary tongs, and Fig. 2 is a side view of the same.
The invention will first be full described, and then pointed out in the claim.
A is a wooden handle, to the forward end of which are attached two wires, 0 O. The middle part of wire B is bent into rectangular form, as shown in Fig. 1. The end parts of the wire B then extend back to the handle A parallel with each other, and in nearly a straight line. The middle part of the rim 0 is bent into rectangular form, and its end parts pass back nearly parallel with each other, but at such a distance apart as to receive the two parts of the wire B between them. After passing back a little distance the end parts of wire 0 are bent upward nearly at right angles, extend a little distance above the wire B, and are bent toward the handle A at an angle a little less than a right angle, and near the end of the handle A have a coil formed in them to give them elasticity. To the upper part of the wire 0, a little above its coils, is attached a thumb-piece, D, for the operator to rest his thumb upon when using the tongs, and also to keep the parts of the wire 0 in proper relative position. The forward sides of the rectangles formed in the middle parts of the wires B G are flattened, and their ends are corrugated, as shown in Fig. 2, to enable the tongs to more readily grasp and more securely hold the article to be held. To the other end of the handle A is attached a claw, E, similar to the claw of a stove-cover lifter, to enable the tongs to be used for lifting stove-covers, plates, pie-dishes, &c.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Apair of wire tongs, B G, the prong O being the lower, upwardly bent above the other, and provided with thumb-piece D, as described, to
enable the end of prong O to be moved to and from that of prong B, in the manner set forth.
ALFRED GREENLEAF.
