JACOB F. LANGENAU, 0F CLEVELAND, OHIO. ASSIG-NOE TC? THE LANG-ENAU IKEANUFAC- TUBING- COMPANY, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
FASTENING DEVICE.
Original application filed May 28, 1920, Serial No. 384,809. Divided and this application filed October. 23,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB F. LANGENAU, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, ounty ofCuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fastening Devices, of which the following is a specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained, and the best mode in wh ch I have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it from other inventions.
The present improvements, relating, as indicated, to fastening devices, have more particular regard to looks or hasps of the sort used on trunks, suit cases and the like, characterized by having a hasp in the form of a link that is carried by a pivotal member so as to engage. with a hook-likemember or projection when in looking position. The object of the present invention is to provide supplemental means for securing such pivota1 member in place when the hasp is in such locking position, the means ordinarily provided for this purpose consisting. of a pin or a stud member which more or less tightly fits into an aperture in the base plate to which said member is attached. 7
To the accomplishment of the foregoing and related ends, the invention, then, consists of the means hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims, the annexed drawing and the following-description illustrating but several of the vari ous mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be embodied.
In said annexed drawing Fig. l is a front elevation or plan view of a fastening device embodying my present improvements, said device being shown in its closed or looking position; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of said device with parts shown in section as indicated by the line 22, Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, but showing the pivotal hasp-carrying member removed so as to disclose more clearly the supplemental locking device; and Fig. 4 is a transverse section of such supplemental fastening device, the'plane of the section being indicated by line 4-4, in Figs. 1 and 2. v
Referring to the general assembly views as my improved device shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the familiar parts of the fastener comprise two base plates 1 and 2, which are Serial No. 596,182.
to the latter in turn is a projection 4, preferably in. the form of a hollow boss, to the outer edge of which is pivotally attached by means of a pin 5, a hollow member 6 having swingably secured thereto a link 7,
which constitutes the aforesaid hasp. The
free end of this link, in other words, is adapted, when member 6 is swung outwardly, to engage beneath the hook-like projection 3 on late 1. and when saidmember is thereupon pressed backwardly against the plate 2, the two plates, with the parts of the trunk or equivalent article will be forcibly drawn together.
As shown in Fig. 2, the pivotal axis 5 of the member 6 should lie without the plane of the link in the locking position of the parts just described so as to minimize any tendency on the part of member 6 to swing outwardly to releasing position; however, I have found it desirable to add a supplemental locking device in order to secure agginst any but purposeful opening of the loo 1.
With this in view, the upper end 8 of the member 6, which is curved to present a convenient finger. piece for operation of the look, as best illustrated in Fig. 2, is provided with-a necked stud 20 fixedly secured thereto, such stud, in a locking position of the parts, being arranged to project through an aperture 21 in plate 2. The portion of said plate, in which aperture 21 is thus formed, is preferably raised to provide a flat boss, and in the recess thus provided on the rear or under-face of the plate, a recurved spring 22 is housed, the arms of such spring normally intersecting the aperture and being adapted to grip the sides of the stud 20 in the fashion best shown in Fig. 4. The action, in other words, is somewhat similar to that of a snap fastener in that the head of the stud 20 is rounded so that upon being forced into opening 21, it will spread the two arms of spring 22 apart and the latter then will engage with the reduced portion or neck of said stud and thus hold the latter against accidental dislodgment from such aperture 21. Spring 22 is convenlently held in place by means of a cover plate 23 that closes the depressionv formed by the boss in which such aperture .21 is formed, suchplate and the spring beingsecured to the under-face of the part 2 by means of a1 rivet 24k, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
The foregoing supplemental locking de vice, it will accordingly be seen, aiiordsa 'sinrle and *et effective a 'encv for retaining-the member 6 with the hasp 7 "in locking position. There is, of course, no particular-strain placed upon the stud 20, so-
is=to bercgarde'd as a division or continuation of such co-pending case.
@ther modes of-applying the principle-of my invention maybe employed instead=of the one explained, ch-ange'being made as regards-the mechanism herein disclosed, provided the means stated by anyof the follow ing claims Orthe-equivalent ofsuch stated means'be employed. I
I therefore particularly point out tinctly claim as my invention 1. In fastening device of the character described, the combination with two plates designed to be secured in abutting relation OIl'tlle parts to befastened together, a hookand dislike projection rigidly mounted on one of said plates, a member pivotally attached to the other plate, and a link carriedbysaid member and'adapted to engagesaid projectiozr to "lock saidplates togethen said mem her being provided with a necked stud adjacent its free end; of a resilient member secured on-the corresponding plate adapted to engage such stud antl'thus to retain said member against accidental movement.
2. In a fastening device of the character described, the combination with two plates designed to be secured V in abutting? relation on the parts to be fastened together, a hooklike pro]ection rigidly mounted on-one of said plates, a member pivotally attached to the other plate, a lini: carried by said member and adai 'ited toengage said projection to lock saidplates together, said memher bein arovided with anecked stud ad-- acent 1ts free end and the cones 01161110 23 plate beingformed with an" aperture disposed to receive such stud; of a spring secured to the rea-nface' of said late and adapted tojenga ge with such stud when thus received in such aperture and therebyl'retain said member against accidental movement.
3; In a fasteningdevice of the character described,- the combination with twotp'la t es designed to be securedin abutting relation on the parts to be fastened together, a'ho0k-* like pro ectionrigidly mounted 'onone of said plates, a member pivotally attached to the other plate, and a linkcarried by said member and adapted to engage saidprojec I tion to lock said plates together, said memher being provided with necked stud adjacent its free endvand: the corresponding plate being formed with a raisedboss having an aperture disposed to receive such stud; of a reourved spring secured to the rear face of said plate in arecess formed by such boss, the arms of such spring normally ntersecting such aperture and being adapted to grip the sides of such stud'when thus-received in such aperture and thereby retain'said member against accidental movement; 4 r V Signed by me this'l9 day of Oct', 1922; JACOB F. LANGENAU.
