ANGLE-COCK HOLDER.
Application filed August 22, 1922. Serial` No. 583,657.
Cock Holders, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description. Y
The object of this invention is to provide l a holder for angle cocks, which may be readily applied, securely held in place, and serve to adequately support the train pipe, and be readily removed and at the same \.`tin1e prevent the angle cock from turning w and from pulling ofi' from and pulling out the train pipe.
The invention consists of an angle cock holder, made in one piece and having a front portion which is divided to straddle the angle cock between the hex and body `of the angle cock and thus to engage the said angle cock and also having individual rearward extensions at the top of the front portion which are separate from one another and adapted to overlie and be enaged with a support lixed on the car above ghe angle cock and the train pipe on which it is fixed, and also to engage the adjacent faces or angles of the hex of the angle cock, this holder being applicable to the angle cock from below by an upward tilting movement in a rearward direction Jfrom in front of the hex on the anglecock, as I will proceed now to explain and finally claim.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention, in the several figures of which like parts are similarly designated, Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the holder of the invention in the process of application and alsovapplied. Fig. 2 is a front elevation. Fig'. 3 is a vertical section, of the holder detached, taken in the plane of line 3 3, Fig. 2. Fig. l is a crosssection taken in the plane of line .el-44, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary side elevation illustrating a vmodified form of holder; Fig. 6 is an elevation, and Fig. 7 is a vertical section of the same.
1 may represent a portion of anend sill of a cai', to which is fastened the support, here shown as an Lshaped metallic bracket 2 located at the point where the train pipe 3 passes outwardly from beneath the car. 4 is the hex and a small adjacent portion of the ordinary angle cock'screwed to the train pipe 3 as usual. l
The holder 5 as shown 'in F igs.. l to 4, may be described as an exaggerated unconventional V-shaped structure, having the front portion 6 extending from below the angle cock upwardly in front of itshex.
As shown, the upper ends of the holder are extended backwardly or toward the car,`
as at 7, and these rearward extensions have downwardly projecting outside flanges 8 and the walls 9, the extensions 7 overlying the horizontal portion of the support 2 while the flanges 8 engage the edges of this support to thereby hold the holder in place on the support, and the walls 9 contact with the upper faces or angles of the hex to prevent displacement as well as rotation of the' angle cock. Y
It is obvious -from the foregoing that the holder can not be applied to the angle cock and support by a straight movement. 'It is necessary to effect the application to tilt the holder upwardly from beneath the angle cock as indicated by dotted lines 10 in Fig.
'1, and then by a sort of turning movement to bring the extensions 7 backwardly over.
The invention is susceptible of modifications within its principle, and without attempting to detail all of such modications, I have herein shown one in Figs. 5, 6 and 7. This modification differs from the construction already described in several particulars. For example, as shown in Fig. 6, the front contour may be segmental or U-shaped instead of V-shaped, and-the front portion 6 may be strengthened or reinforced by a right-angled flange or rib 12. and the side flanges may be extended clear down to the rib. as indicated at 13. This holder is applied in a way similar to that first described.
In both constructions herein illustrated the rearward extensions are provided with bolt holes 14 through which extend the ends of the staple-like bolts 415, which st'raddle the pipe 3 and pass from beneath through the horizontal portion of the support 2, and are fastened down on top of the rearward extensions 7 by means of the nuts 16. Similar bolts, or even ordinary U-bolts 17, may be used to engage the pipe 3 and the hori- 'order to .detach or remove either of the holders, the bolts are first, removed and' then the holder'is tilted in a reverse `direction from that used-in applying it.
As will be observed, the constructions shownand described do not require the use of a pocket'in the holder for engaging the angle'cockg It is'to be. noted also'that in both con;A
structions the holder is of one piece. I
- As indicated, in, both constructions, the walls 9 are provided to engage at least and preferably two of the faces or angles of the hex. By locating these walls above the axis of the cock as shown, they not only'prevent the cock fromturning but also prevent it from escaping vertically.
The use of the present A. R. A. standard type D coupler, so-called, requires an extension of the train 'pipe inorder to properly place the train-pipe coupling arrangement, and it is desirable to supportthe thus- Aextended train-pipe in order that 1t and its attached angle-cock may not be dislocated The support 2 affords means for the support of the extended train-pipe, in that lts horizontal portion ma f be made of any length required by suc extension and the angle-cock holder rests upon its top and 1s bolted thereto by theI bolts 15, the'train-pipe being thereby drawn up into intimate supporting contact with the underside of the l support and rigidly rso held.
By removal Ofthenuts 16 the bolts are free to be disconnected from the support, angle-cock holder and train-pipe, and the holder may then 'be detached. No other part -o the mechanism need be disturbed.
The holders by reason of the simplicity of their design may be economically manufactured by drop-forging, so that they combine great strength and lightness.
What I claim is 1. An angle cock holder, made in one piece and having a front portion divided to. straddle the'angIe cockbetween the hex and body of the angle cock, and having separate rearward extensions at the top .of the front portion and integral'therewith to engage a supportxed on the car and also having portions' to engage the adjacent faces of the hex of the angle cock to prevent 'sion at the top of each division of the frontV portion and overlying' the horizontal portion of the support, said holder also having walls between the frontv portion and extensions engaging at least two faces of the hex of the angle cock, and means t-o rigidly connect the support, the holder and the angle cock.
- 3..In an angle cock holding device, the combination with a support having a horizontal portion extending outwardly from the car, lof a one piece vholder having a longitudinally divided front .portion to straddle the angle cock between the hex and body of the angle cock, a separate rearward extension at the top of each division of the front portion and overlying the horizontal portion of the' support, said holder also having walls between the front portion and extensions engaging at least two faces of the hex of the angle cock, side fianges on the extensions engaging the ,side edges of the support, and means to rigidly connect the support, the holder and the angle cook.
