F.M.SLATER MOTOR ROTATION F OR ROCK DRILLS Filed May 5, 1922 INVENTOR 9 HIS AT l' RNEY Patented May I UNITED STATES, PATENT-f OFFICE,
FRED M. SLATER, or EASTON, PENNSYLVANIA, Ass'renon rro INGERSOLL-RAND COMPANY, or JERSEY crrY, NEW JERSEY, A
MOTOR ROTATION Application filed May 5,
- To all whom it mag 1 concern of Easton, in the county of. Northampton I inafter appear, the invention consists of the and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain Motor Rotation for Rock Drills, of which the following is a specification accompanied by drawings,
This invention'relates to fluid actuated rock drills of the hammer type, having an independent motor for rotating thedrill steel, but relates more particularly to a fluid actuated rotation motor. having a cas-' ing adapted to be sleeved over a portion of the drill cylinder at the back end of the machine.
The objects of the invention are to simplify, strengthen and cheapen a motor construction of the type referred to, and also enable the parts to be assembled.
To these and other ends, which' will herereadily assembled and disfeatures of construction and combinations of elements substantially as described and claimed in this specification and shown in p the accompanying drawings, in which Figurel is a side elevation in longitudinal section of so much of a rock drill as willserve to illustrate the invention, the back end section being taken on the line 1-1- of Figure 2 or 4 looking in the direction oft-he Figure 2 is atransverse sectional'view on the line 2-2 of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrows, a
Figure 3 is 'a perspective view of the motor casing-and v Figure 4 is a perspective view of the cylinder back extension. l I
Referring to the drawings, the cylinder A in which the pistonB reci rocates, isprovided with the front head 3 and front head parts, into which the drill steel D extends in position to receive the impact blows of the piston..
A cylinder back extension E, forming a prolongation. of the cylinder bore, is provided with a portion F extending into the cylinder, and is also formed witha flange G, and a rearwardly extending reducedvportion H. y
The drill-steel D, is adapted to be rotated by an independent rotation motor, preferably'a gear motor of the fluid actuated type,
CORPORATION or new JERSEY.
ron ROCK DRILLS.

and in accordance with this invention, the motor casing J is open at front and back as indicated particularly in Figure 3, and is provided with achamber K for the motor, and a sleeve portion L adapted to be sleeved over the reduced portion H of the cylinder back extension E. By means of such construction, the faced flange G of the cylinder back extension forms the front head of the motor casing. A back head O, fitted to the motor casing, as indicated in Figure 1, forms a common head for both the bore of the cylinder and the motor chamber K in the motor casing J. The parts of the machine are suitably held together by the usual side bolts P. i The motor comprises the rotary gears Q and R suitably mounted on roller bearings S on the studs T held in the back head 0 as by means'of the tap screws U. One gear is 7 stance, the forward end of the shaft V is provided with the roller-be-aring'W and the pinion X meshing with the gear Y, which is I connected to the gear Z, meshing with the gear. a on the'rotating chuck 6 into which the drill steel D extends? The chuck -his suitably clutched to a chuck key 0.: .The supply of motive fluid to the machine is controlled by the throttle d having the handle e and the motive fluid passes to the drill' cylinder through the passage f v' and to the motor casing through the passage 9.
- Motive fluid exhausts from-the motor casing through the exhaust port' it into the' chamber j in the cylinder surrounding the driving shaft V and passes to atmosphere through the ports-k.
casing sleeved over the reduced portion of said back cylindervextension and a common back head for both the cylinder bore and the motor casing. v 2. An independently rotated fluid actuated rock drill of the hammer type,"comprising a cylinder and reciprocating piston, a cylinder backextension extending into the cylinder and having a flange and a rear- 110,-
wardly extending reduced portion forming a prolongation of the cylinder bore, a motor casing open at front and back and having a chamber for the motor and a sleeve portion adapted to he sleevedover the said reduced portion of the cylinder back extension, and
acommon back headfor both the cylinder bore and the motor casing.
3. An independently rotated fluid actu' atedrock drill of the hammer typev comprising a cylinder and reciprocatingpiston, a
cylinder back extension extending into the cylinder and having a flange and a rear-' Wardly extending reduced portion forming a prolongation of the cylinder bore, a motor;
open at front and back and having of the motor casing, and a back head fitted to theimotor casing and forming a'common head for both the bore of the cylinder and the motor chamber in the said-motorcasing.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification.
