In closing the hatches the slings '13an'd hook 22 are applied as before and the hatches are brought by means of the derrick or the. like lifting. device-immediately over the centre partof the hold and are lowered into the position shown in Fig. t1-1with the lower. edges of "the depending hatch members resting upon 'the'hatch coaming. 7 order to facilitate'the operation of separatingthe said lower edges of the hatch members 1 and 2'any convenient device may be employed. In one arrangement which has, been found very convenient anjadditional sling, 24; is applied in the manner shownflin the drawings. At thelowerend {of the said sling a flathookf 25 is secured which is passed into engagement over the lower edge of, the narrower hatch member 1, while the hook or ring26 atthe upper end of the sling 2 1 is brought into lifting engagement with thehook 22 of the liftingtackle.

In ships hatches, the combination with i an inverted T-beam, of a pair of hatch members hinged to the horizontal part of the beam, one hatch member to one edge and the other hatch member to the other edge of the said horizontal part of the beam, one hatch member having a smaller widththan the other hatch member, the adjacent edges of the hatch members being arranged to abut against the opposite sides of the verticalpart of the beam when the hatches are in the closed position, means on the said vertical part of the beam for engagement by a lifting device, and means for separating the lower edge of the hatch member having the smallest width hatch member 'when lowering the hatches into closed position.
