H. G. FITZGERALD LAMP May 15, i923. 1,455,245

Patented May 15, 1923.
Hanonne. Err'z GERALD, or Los ANGELES, cALrroRNrA.
LAMP.
Applicationv led October 10,1919, Serial No. 329,869. Renewed April 5, 1923;
To all whom t may con cem `Be' ittknown that I, TrLmoLn- Frm GERALD, a citizen of the United States, residingatLos Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lamps,` of which the following is a specilication.- y
My invention relates to spotlights for vehicles or automobiles and more particularly to means of constructing vthe'same so as to provide securing means whereby the reflector may be secured to the switch containing mechanism and has for its object to provide a means of manufacture in which the reiector shell can be permanently anchored to the switch container.
My means of accomplishing the foregoing may be more readily understood by having reference to the accompanying drawings which are hereunto annexed and are a part of the specification, in which The ligure is a vertical sectional view of a. spotlight constructed in accordance with my improvement.
Similar reference numerals refer to similar parts throughout the entire description.
As shown in the drawings, the lamp comprises a reflector shell 8, the front of which is closed with a glass 12, the same being secured in place by means of an annular bead 13, which fits over the forward edge 12 of the reflector 8 at its'periphery and the glass 12 to hold the latter in position.
An electric lamp bulb 9, of standard construction is mounted in the lamp socket 10 in which the base of the lamp bulb 9 is located. A switch 11 is provided to make the desired contact. The reflector 8 is provided with a central concave recess at 14 which has a central opening, the edges of which are flared outwardly to form the anchor 15. A peripheral flange or bead 16 is formed on the edge and serves to assist its holding qualities. This anchor is formed at the same time that the metal forming the reiector is stamped, thus making the anohor and reflector of an integral piece of metal.
At the back of the reflector and for the purpose of containing the base of the lamp bulb 9, and also to form the upper part of a swivel member, is a cast sleeve 17, which is cast directly upon the reflector, the molten meta-l flowing around the anchor 15 and the bead 1,6 so that it becomes embedded in the sition. The lamp or bulb 9, may be moved 4 to bringthe lamp filament into the proper or desired focus of the reflector 8 prior to tightening the screw 20, such focusing being permitted by means of the concavity 14 in the reflector which is of sufficient size to accommodate a portion of the lamp bulb 9.
rlhe metal forming the member 17 preferably extends beyond the anchor 15 into a neck 22 and has a head 23 disposed internally of the reflector. The forward surface of the head 23 is formed to merge into the inner surfaceof the reflector 8.
In the preferred form, the member 17 is provided with a portion which extends over the exterior surface of the reflector at the recessed portion 14 for additional strength. Each of the ears 18 is provided with a rearwardly extending integral lug or abutment 25.
Having` thus disclosed my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A lamp body comprising a casing in which a source of illumination may be disposed, and a cast supporting member formed thereon at the rear thereof; said casing comprising a shell having an aperture in the rearward wall thereof, the material of the casing at the aperture being formed into an anchor which is embedded in the cast member, and the cast member encasing said an- Chor both externally and internally.
2`. A lamp body comprising a casing in which a source of illumination may be disposed, and a cast supporting member formed thereon at the rear thereof; said casing comprising a shell having an aperture in the rearward wall thereof. .the material of the casing at the aperture being formed into -an anchor which is embedded in the cast member, and the cast member encasing sa1d anchor both externally' and internally and extending into the casing where an inner surface thereof merges into the inner surface of the casing.
3. A lamp body comprising a shell having a parabolic portion and a rearwardly protruding portion conjoined therewith, and a cast metal supporting member formed thereon; said shell having a central aperture through the protruding portion and an integral tubular anchor at said aperture;
` said anchor being embedded in said supporting member, and said supporting member extending laterally to cover Said protruding shell portion and extending through the aperture in the shell to the interior thereot Where it is formed with a surface portion merging into the inner surface of the shell.
4. A lamp body comprising a shell having a parabolic portion and ay rearwardly protruding portion conjoined therewith` and a east metal supporting member formed thereon; said shell having a central apername to this specication in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
