ADVERTISING DEVICE.
Application filed November To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, 'ALBERT F. WARD, a citizen or" the United States, residing at the` city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Advertising Devices, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to an advertising device, and especially to a mechanical or changeable picture.
The object of the present invention is to generally improve and simplify devices of the character described, and especially to provide a mechanically assembled picture, one or more portions of which may be moved to produce changeable effects, or otherwise attract the attention of passerbys or users for the purpose of advertising, amusing, etc.
Other objects will hereinafter appear.
rlhe invention consists of the parts and theconstruction, combination and arrangeymentof parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the 25 accompanying drawings, in which- Aiig: 'l is a front view of the invention, showing it applied to an ordinary calendar.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the front plate of the calendar removed and disclosing the mechanism whereby movement is imparted to the changeable portions of the picture.
Fig. 3 is a central, vertical, longitudinal section taken on line 3*3, Fig. l.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the intermediate plate. y
Fig. 5 is a perspective view on one of the movable frame plates.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the other movable plate.
Referring to the drawings in detail, and particularly to Figs. l and 2, it will be seen that the inventian has been applied to an ordinarycalendar. The front or' the calendar consists of a plate constructed of paper or any other suitable material, as indicated at A, upon which is printed, painted or otherwise formed a picture; for instance, of a baby, as illustrated at 2. Formed in this front plate A are three openings, as indicated at 3, 4 and 5. The openings 3 and 4 register with or form the eyes of the picture, while the opening 5, which is rectangular in shape, is disposed behind the calendar indidicated at D and f mediate plate B and the 2, 1921. Serial No. 512,305.
cated at 6 for described.
The whole device in reality consists of three main plates, the front plate A, an in termediate plate D, and a rear plate C. The rear plate is solid and has no openings formed therein. The intermediate plate has a large rectangular shaped opening formed therein as indicated at 7, while the front plate has the openings 3, 4 and formed therein. When the three plates are assembled as shown in Fig. 3, it can be seen that purposes to be hereinafter a pocket or chamber is formed within the intermediate plate as indicated at `7. This l pocket or recess is provided for the reception of a pair of frame plates generally in- E. The plate D is rectangular in shape; its width is identical to the width of the pocket or recess 7 so that no side movement may be imparted thereto. but the length of the plate D is slightly less than the length ofthe recess 7 so that a space 8 is formed; said space beingprovided to permit vertical or endwise movement of the plate D. The interior of the plate D is cut away to form an I shaped recess F. This recess is identical in shape to the plate E, which is placed therein. The plate E is however a little narrow when compared to the recess F and sutlicicnt space is therefore left as indicated at 9, l0 and 11, to permit lateral movement of the plate E with relation to the plate D. The interplates D and E assume the same plane as the plate D, is movable within the recess 7, and similarly the plate E is movable within the recess formed in the plate D. The two plates indicated at D and E are thus secured against removal when the top plate A is applied, but endwise movement may be imparted to the plate D as the space 8 permits `such movement, while lateral movement may be imparted to the plate E, as the spaces indicated at 9, l() and ll permit such movement.
To impart movement to the respective plates D and E, the calendar 6 is made use of. This calendar is secured to the plate E by means of a spacing block or plate l2. This block extends through the opening 5 and as it is smaller than the openingl 5, it can be seen that vertical and lateral move ment may be imparted to the plates D and E, through means of the calendar. In order to attract attention to the calendar, for purposes of amusement, advertising or otherwise, a pair of eyes, such as shown at 14, are printed, painted or otherwise `formed on the upper end of the plate E. The eyes are so positioned as to substantially register With the openings 3 and a in the iront plate- `movement of the plates D and E permit universal movement Within a limited range. This movement,as previously stated, is imparted bygrasping the calendar 6 and moving it in any direction desired, and this movement is transmitted through the block l2`and plates E and D as the calendar is secured to the block l2, and this in turn is secured to the plate E.
While the present invention shoivs vapicture in which the eyes are movable, it is obvious that it maybe changed to move any portion .of the picture desired, and similarly that movement may vbeimparted to one or more portions of the picture simultaneously. Further, While the device is shown as applied to a calendar, it may be applied to any picture or object desired. I also Wish it understood that the materials and finish of the several parts employed may be such as the experience and judgment of the manufacturer vmay dictate or varying uses may demand.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. An advertising` device of the character described comprising a front plate, an intermediate plate, a rear plate, the intermediate plate having a cut out portion forming a recess between the iront and rear plates, a picture on the `iront plate, the front plate having openings therein registering with certain facial portions of said picture, a. plate in the recess of the intermediate plate having` portions of a picture printed thereon to register with the openings in the front plate, and means movable in a direction transversely of and longitudinally of the front plate and havingconnection With the plate in the recess of the intermediate plate whereby to impart movements in different directions to the plate in the recess.
2. An advertising device oi the character described comprising a iront, a rear and an intermediate plate, the intermediate plate having a rectangular shaped recess Jformed therein, a plate vertically movable lin said recess, and having a. recess therein, a second plate laterally movablev in said recess, a picture on the front plate, the front plate having openings formed therein in register with certain portions o'li, the picture, means for imparting movement to the tWo plates disposed Within the recess oi' the intermediate plate in a vertical and in a lateral direction, and portions of a picture printed on the last named movable plate adapted to register with the openings in the picture on the front plate.
3. iin advertising device of the character described comprising a iront, a rear andan int. 'nicdiate plate., the intermediate 'plate hating a rectangular shaped recess iormed therein, a plate vertically movable inV said recess, `and having a recess therein, a secont plate laterally movable in said last mentioned recess, a picture on the front plate, the 'trent plate having openings termed therein in register with certain portions oi the picture, and also having another opening therein, a block secured to said last named plate and projecting through the last mentioned opening in the iront plate, a calendail attached to said block and covering the block and the opening through which the block projects, said calendar andthe block being adapted to impart movement to ythe two plates disposed Within the recessv in the intermediate plate in a vertical and in a lateral direction, so as to register portions of the picture printed on said last named plate with the first mentioned openings in the front plate. Y
4t. A device of the character ldescribed con'iprising a iront, an `intermediate and a rear plate, the intermediate plate having. a rectangular shaped opening formed therein, a pair of movable plates in said recess, one movable in a vertical direction and one movable both in a vertical and in a lateral direction, a picture printed on the front plate, the iront plate having openings in register with certain portions of the picture, printed matter on one of the movable plates registerking with the openings in the front plate,
and means 'for imparting movement to the movable plates. j v Y i 5. A. device ot' the; character described comprising a front, an intermediate anda rear plate, the intermediatev plate having a rectangular shaped opening formed therein, a pair of movablel plates in said recess, one
