Be it known that l, WILLIAM Concnouon, a citizen ot the `United .Stateso residing at Norwood, in the county oit Hamilton and State ot" Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Padding-Cover Clamps for Pressing Machines, ot which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to ironing presses and particularly to those utilized 'for pressin@ cus and neclbands.
Fre-sees of the type referred to usually comprise an upper p-ressing member, angular in vertical cross section and `a lower` pressing member having an ironing *face ot similar coniguration provided with a padding which is held in place by a cover cloth secured to the bed or pressing member by pins projectingy from the lower side of the pressing member and through the cloth. Thi-s type of holding means is very undesirable for the reason that the pins must have sharp points in order that they may penetrate the covering and they often injure the operators hands when applying the cloth, or when doing anything about the lower pressing member. Furthermore it is undesirable for the reason that in applying the cover cloth it is necessary to stretch it to an undesirable extent in order to pass it over the pins and after it is secured in this way it becomes loose and does not present a smooth finish.
The above disadvantages have been overcome in the present device by providing clamps at the lower outer edges of the bed or lower pressing member arranged .in such a manner that the cover cloth may vbe stretched to the desired point and the clamp allowed to engage th'e cloth thus holding the same in the proper position to which it has been stretched. A yielding backing is provided for the clamp so as to increase the grip of the clamp upon the cloth.
Further features of invention will more fully and at large appear :from the following descriptions, drawings and claims.
Referring to the drawings, Fig. 1 is :t view in elevation showing the upper portion of a small press provided with the clamp; Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation of parts of the lower pressing member, the cover cloth being omitted; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view upon the line 3-3 ot' Fig. 2. and showing the cover cloth.

Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a biturcated support having` a head or upper pressing member 2 secured to its two arms. This head 2 is angular in cross section and presents an ironing surtace 3, angular in cross section and provided with curve at the apex. Slidably mounted in the frame is a reciprocating member e carrying a lower pressing member 5 provided with an ironing surface 6 conforming to the conigura tion of the ironing surface oii the upper pressing member. Slidably mounted upon this lower pressing member 5 is a plate 7 mounted upon a :frame 8 which conforms in general design to the shape of the lower pressing member 5. This trame S is provided at each of its ends with rearwardly extending rails 9 secured to the lower outer ends of the plate 7 as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The frame at each oi the lower outer corners is provided with an ear 10 for a purpose to be described. Each oit the rails at the rear of the plate Y is provided with Van ear 11 corresponding to the ear 10 and in transverse alignment therewith, as shown in Fig. 2. Each of the rails 9 is further provided with a downwardly extending flange or skirt 12 and to this skirt is secured a pad 13 of yielding material such cork. the pad being held in place by suitable screws 13 shown in the dotted lines in Fig. 3. The ears 10 and 11 extend beyond this pad 13 and receive between them a clamping member 'consisting ot a plate 14e and a re-entorcing strip or plate 15. These two plates are bent at an angle to each other so as to sti'tiien the former. At each end the plate 14. is provided with an. ear 16, these ears receiving bolts 17 passing through the ears 10 and 11.
In use, a suitable padding 18 is arranged upon the plate 7 and over this padding a cover cloth 19 is provided. lt is preferably folded in under the front and rear edges of the padding, and at the ends it extends down over the pads 153 and back ot the plate 14 which is at this particular stage swung in a clockwise direction away 'trom the position shown in Fig. The operator then uses the bracing strip or plate 15 as a. handle and after the cover cloth has been drawn taut, he moves this plate and the plate 14 in a counter-clockwise direction until the rear edge of this plate 14 engages the cover cloth and causes it to imbed itseli2 in the pad 13. lt will be seen from the foregoing that the cover cloth will be held at both ends in the position in which it has been stretched by the operator.
Having described my invention, l claim: 1. ln a press, a. pressing member, a padding thereon, a yielding clamping pad oarried by said pressing member, and a. movable clamp comprising a plate having a clamping edge supported i'or movement in an are greater than the distance from its support to the pad.
2. In a press, a pressing member, a padding thereon, a yielding backing member Carried by said pressing member, and a swinging Clamp comprising a plate having a clamping edge co-operating with said backing member, ears carried by said plate and pivotally supported on the pressing member, said ears and said plate being eonstrueted and arranged so that the clamping edge of the plate moves in an arc having a greater radius than the distance from its pivotal points to said backing member.
3. In a press, a Work holding plate, a pad therefor, a cover cloth on said pad, and clamp nasales means for lsaid cloth comprising yielding backing pad, and a swinging clamping plate supported for movement toward the backing pad and adapted by engagement of its edge therewith to ola-mp and embed the cover cloth therein.
4. ln a` press, a pressing member, a padding thereon, a. yielding clamping pad member carried by the pressing member, a cover cloth extending over 'the padding and pad member, and a swinging clamp-comprising a plate having a Clamping edge veo-operating with said pad member, ears Carried by said plate and pivotally supported on the press ing member, said ears and said plate being constructed and arranged so that the clamping edge of the plate moves in any are having a greater radius than the distance from its pivotal points to the pad member, and said pivots being in advance of said. plate along the direction of pull of the cloth eorer upon the plate.
