GARTER' Filed Sept. l2 1921 Patented May l5, i923.
DAVID o. LASH, or SHIRLEY, MASSACHUSETTS; `l
Gaarne.
Application filed September '12,' 19721. Serial No. 500,030.
To allwhomz't may concern: v j Be it known that I, DAVID C. LAsH, a citi'- zen of the United States of America, and resident of Shirley, in thevcounty of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented 'new and useful Vlmprovernents in Garters, of which the following is a specil with the .fasteners and one end of the* web permanently'stitched thereto, and in mens garters with a hook (or eye) 'also sewed thereon for attachment with the otherend ofthe web. `The fabric pad is composed of several layers which must beA foldedV and assembled and'then ysewed together. All this folding, assembling and. sewing adds materiallyto the c ost of thegarter and 'any defect vin the sewing 'renders the article short lived. And with such construction it is not practicable4 to rip the parts asiinder to wash the web when soiled or to replace the web when it loses its elasticity. Moreover the angulairelationship between the web and pad is lixed so that the web cannot be adjusted, without wrinkling, to make different angles withthe connector, thereby to be fitted either to 'a long slender leg where the web meets the connector at a sharp upward inclination 'or to a fat leg where the web meets the connector more nearly horizontally. l,
Objects of the present invention are to veliminate the aforesaid folding, assembling and sewing, to make the connectormore g' sanitary and at the same time more durable, Vto make the web readily adjustable in length, to make the web readily detachable f .for washing orreplacement, to make the yweb and connector angularlyadju'stable vin relation to veach other at both ends ofthe vweb, to reduce the number of metallic parts, to avoid metallic parts on the inner side of the garter, to make the garter thinand "ordinarily elastic, av connector C forY interf.
sd as notv'to push out the'iouter clothing or the .wearer when the clothing is drawn tightlythereover,.and in general to provide a garter which will last many times longer than the ordinary garter except theV web which may be readilyreplaced. .7 l 'i A'cardinal aspect ofthe invention consists in.y joiningthe fastenerv and l`web together with a fplate' instead of the ordinary fabric pad, the" plate being flexible 'to permit more or less fiexure'r in attachment and detachment of the garter and in use,` especially in m'ens garters where the connector. frequently fits over the shin bone, but being sufficiently stiifnot to be otherwise distorted-lin use. The plate should also be non-rusting "to withstand the action of perspiration. "While i certain objects of the inventionjmay be attained by.` making the plate ofzhard rubber, wood fiber or other compositiomor veven of on theV web or 'clothing `and and'haiidsome appearance. f.
in another important aspectthe invention metal, 'I ppieferablyemploy Celluloid inasl f ymuch as it is waterproofand'non-abrasive presents a smooth involves aluniqueinterconnection ofttlie connectorvand the `other parts of the garter.' In the preferred embodiment the plate'is slotted to receiveboth thefastener "and'onei end of the web, and thewebis secured'tot'he plate solely by frictioniv Thisvfrictionalfattacliment can bes't'be effected by .providing two juxtaposed parallel slots inthe plate, v these slots defining a bar therebetween, andV by looping the webv around the lbar through theslotswith its free endffrictionally held betweenthe plate and the web., 'In theca'se of mens garters the hook (oreye.) attached I to the otherend of the webxis also preferably secured in placesolely by friction. f f
In order moreclearly to illustrate thefna j ture of thev invention `l'h/avesho'wn preferred embodiments thereof iny the accompanying l f drawings, in whichlFig.' l' isa front view of one embodiment;
Fig; 2 is a section on line2--2 of Fig. 1;.
Fig. Sis a section and I j Fig. 4 vis a front view of a differentembodiinent. a portion Vof the web being broken on line 3-v-3 of Fig. l;
away.v -1'7 l The particular' embodimentillustratedin '.Figs. 1, 2 and 3 comprisesV a fastener F of any suitable construction, a web W which is connecting the fastener F and one end of the web l/"V, and an eye-member l adapted to hook overa stud H on the connector C.
The embodiment shown in Fig. l differs only in the shape of the connector C', the fastener` li", web WV', eye-member and stud H all being identical with the parts correspondingly designated in the preceding figures. I
As above indicated one of the principal features of theinvention consists in interconnecting the fastener F and web W with a plate instead of the ordinary fabric pad. Thus in the figures l. have illustrated the connectors C and C', as plates. The connecting plate may be shaped in various ways but the two shapes illustrated in Figs. l and a l consider the best shapes. The plate is preferably formed of Celluloid and the stud thereon is also preferably formed of Celluloid, these two parts being secured to gether by any suitable Celluloid cement but preferably with a cement which comprises celluloid solvent so that the contacting surfaces of the parts are softened in the cement ing process and practically welded together.
The aforesaid slotted connection between theconnector and the fastener and web is preferably effected as illustrated in lligs. l,
and l where X and Y represent juxtaposed parallel slots defining therebetween a bar Z integral with the plate C. The web W is looped around the bar Z through the slots X and Y and the free end w extends between the plate lC and the web `W so that the web is held in position on the connector by means of the frictional engagement between the web and the plate. Y
The slot Y is preferably made slightly shorter than the width of the web and the i slot X slightly wider. rlhis permits adjustment of the angular relationship between the web and connector so that the garter maj,7 be adjusted without wrinkling to either a fat leg or a slender leg. By making the slot Y shorter than the width of the web the end of the web is held in the slot more tightly and in case the web is adjusted to make an angle with the slots differing more or less from a right angle the folded-under end of the web does not project from beneath the web. y
The fastener F is preferably connected to the plate C by means of a loop extending through a single slot S in the plate. The fastener slot S and the web slots X and Y are arranged obliquely with respect to each other to make a better fitting garter.
The web `W is preferably connected to the eye-member l in the saine way that it is connectedvto Vthe plate C, as shown in Fig. 2.. For this .purpose the member l isv provided with slots preferably disposed closely adjacent to each other and of the fsame relative character as the slots X-Y of the plate C. The eye-member I may be formed of any suitable material but it is preferably formed either of Celluloid or metal.
With this construction the parts may be put together or taken apart quickly without the use of a sewing machine or other machine. and the web may be readily detached and an integral plate of flexible material for yconnecting the web and fastener, said plate having a slot near its loweredge for reception of the fastener, a pair of juxtaposed web-receiving` slots neary its upper part, said slots extending obliquely to said first slot, and a connecting element at the central part of the plate.
2. A. garter having a fastener, a web, and a plate of flexible Celluloid forming a` connector therefor, said plate having means for securing the fastener thereto and a pair of juxtaposed slots for the reception of the web, one of said slots being shorter than the other, the length of the shorter slot being less than the Width of theweb.
A garter comprising a web, a 'connecting element securedtoone end of said web, and a plate provided with a connecting element cooperable with said first connecting element, said plate having a pair of juxtaposed slots near one of its edges for reception of the web, the slot further from the edge being longer than the other and the web passing over the front surface of the plate and the shorter slot and rearwardly through the longer slot, thenagainst the rear face of the plate and forwardly through the shorter slot.
. t. A garter comprising'a fastener, a Web, and a connector interconnecting the web and fastener, the connector having, juxtaposed slots to receive the web, the slots extending in the same general direction as one side of the connector and the slot nearer saidside being of less'length than the Width of the web. n
5. A garter comprising a fastener, a web, and a connect-or interconnecting the web and fastener, said connector having va slot near its lower edge for the reception of the fastener, and juxtaposed slots to. receive the web, said latter slots being oblique to the first slot, one of the latter slots being shorter vthan the width of the web and the other slot being at least substantially as long as' the Width of the web.
6. A garter comprising a fastener, a web, and a connector interconnecting the Web and fastener, the connector having a slot for the reception of the fastener, and juxtaposed slots to receive the Web, the latter slots eX- tending obliquely to the first named slot and in the same general direction as one side of the connector, the slot nearer the said side being shorter and Wider than the other, the shorter slot being less in length than the Width of the Web.
