Be it known that' ISAAC C. HowLE'rT, a citizen of the United States of America, re-
siding at Bangs, in the county of Brown and' State of Texas, has invented new and useful Improvements in BagiCutting Machines7 of which the following is a specification.`

The shifting clutch member 37 is provided, as will be seen more clearly by reference to Figures 5 and 8, with a cam groove 47 extendingv peripherally and for a portion of its distance spirally thereof, with the longitudinally deflected or spiral portion 48 thereof arranged in overlapping relation with the initial end 49 and with a depressed bottom or floor as shown at 50 between which and the floor of the initialend of the groove is arranged a shoulder 51. Operating in this groove isa key 52 carried by-a trigger 53 which is pivotally mounted at 54 and is of bell-crank form with a trip arm 55 arranged in the pathof an armed trip 56. y
lVhen the shifting' clutch member is in its closedr position or is in engagement with the clutch members 36 and 39 tol lock the latter to theV drive shaft and thus communicate motion to the movable knife blade, the key 52 is arranged in the cam groove and follows the groove until the spirally deflected portion thereof by cont-act with the key moves the shifting clutch member longitudinally of the shaft against the pressure `of 4the spring`38 to effect the disengagement of Vthe clutch faces. This disengagement occurs and therefore the motion of the cutter blade 'ceases when the crank disk has made one complete revolution. The trigger which carries the key 52 iskactuated by a spring 57 tending to hold the key ydownward in the groove, and therefore the key follows the inwardly deflected bottom of the groove at the end thereof and serves by engagement with the shoulder 49 to hold the shifting-clutch member in the reversed position in lopposition tothe spring 38.
The spindle 58 of the trip 56 carries a worm gear 59 engaged by a worm 60 on the lower or main feed roll, so that'as'the latter -turns and thereby feeds a definite length of the sacking material through the plane of the cutter knives, it communicates motion throughfthe worm and gear to the trip 56 and when the arm of the latter strikes thek triparmk of the trigger 53 lit i cam groove and at the end of a revolution of the drive shaft the clut-ch member is again withdrawn from engagement by the action of the key on the spira-Hy deflected wall of said groove to discontinue the movement of -the cutter mechanism and permit a further length ofthe sacking material to be fed between the blades thereof.

A machine for cutting a continuous strip of material into specified lengths having a feed roll traversed by the material, a cutter mechanism embodying an intermittently movable member, a rotary driving member, a clutch for operatively connecting the cutter mechanism with the driving member, and clutch operating means embodying a trigger, a trip for engagement with said trigger and operated in timed relation with said feed roll, the lclutch having a spring closed` member provided With a spiral cam groove with its terminals in communication longitudinally of the stock, one extremity of the trigger being operatively engaged in said cam groove.
