JOSEPH E. PERRAULT, OF WATERTOWN, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO HOOD RUBBER COMPANY, OF WATERTOWN, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHU- SETTS.
Application filed February 10, 1922.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Josreir E. PERRAULT, a. citizen of the United States, and aresident 'of W'atertown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Methods of Making .-\c1dproof Containers, of which the. following a specification.
My present invention relates to improve- 7 ments in methods of and apparatus for making acid proof containers of vrilcanizable.
plied presser device or former. and Fig. 2 isa' perspective view of the former and fabric or fibrous layer. I
in practising my invention. I use a core or mandrel 1 of a shape conforming to that of the desired article. which is preferably of a slightly tapered formation in part. at least the part towards the bottmn. To the .bottom and sides of this mandrel applied the bottom and side (including end) wall forming material 2. in the shape of sheets of rubber compound. which is rolled down in the customary manner. The said bottom and sides are then preferably covered by a layer of cloth or other suitable fibrous material, indicated at 3, and this cloth is pressed against the container and yulcanized, while so pressed, in an open heat in the manner well understood by those skilled in the art. A convenient manner of so pressing the fab ric. is to make the core tapered and provide a correspondingly tapered presser member l which, when the. core is supported in inverted position will. by its own weight. hold the'fabric pressed against the surfaces due to the tapered formation.
I have discovered that the blisters which cause defects in such containers, occur pram tically exclusively in the bottom and side walls adjacentthereto and that it is necessary only to have the presser member cover the bottom and part of the sides adjacent thereto as shown.
The fabric applies the pressure smoothly METHOD or MAKING A'CIDPROOF CONTAINERS.
Serial No. 535,645.
to the container and venting the gases.
The fabric layer may be placed in the channel of the pre'sser member as shown in Fig. 2, and the assembly applied to the container.
Having thus described my invention. what I claim is 1. The herein describe-.1 method of making rubber acid proof containers. and the like which consists in applying sheet rubber to a mandrel or core to form the bottom and sides, applying over the bottom and two of the sides a fibrous layer. and vulcanizi'ng the article in an open heat while pressing said fabric against the said bottom and sides.
2. The herein described method of forming acid proof containers and the like which consists in applying sheet rubber to a suitable mandrel or core to form the bottom and sides, supporting said mandrel to hold the container in inverted position. applying to the bottom and portions of the side surfaces :1 covering of fibrous material and vulcanizing the article in open heat while said tibrous covering is pressed against the said surfaces.
3. The herein described method of making acid proof containers and the like which con yet all'ords means for sists in applying bottom and side forming layers of sheet rubber to atapcrcd core. appl ing a fibrous covering to the bottom and site surfaces, supporting the mandrel with the container in inverted position. and applying thereto a weighted tapered channel shaped presscr member.
Thc'herein described method of making acid proof containers which consists in applying sheet rubber material to a suitable core and applying prcssurc'to the bottom and adjacent portion of the side walls. and vulcanizing the article in open heat while such pressure is llltllllitllllttl and while venting the surface to which such pressure is applied. V
5. The herein dcscribml method of making acid proof containers which consists in appl ving sheet rubber material to a'suitable core and applying pressure to the bottom and adjacent portion of the side walls by a weiglit member. and vulcanizing the article in open heat while such pressure is maintained and While venting the surface to which such pressure is applied.
In testimony whereof. I affix mv signature.
JOSEPH E. PERRAULT.
