Application filed July 19, 1920. ,Serial No. 897,251.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, VVILBUR A. GARRITT and JAMES H. ENGEBRIGTSON, citizens of the United States, and residents of Sioux City, in the county of \Voodbury and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in SignDisplay1ng Devices, of which the following is a speclfication.
Our invention has for its primary object the production of a mechanically operated device for successively displaying sign cards. A further object of the invention is the production of such a device which operates automatically and dependably, unattended. A still further object of the invention is the production of a device of this class, thoroughly efiicient and dependable in operation, yet simple and inexpensive in both construction and operation.
These and other objects and advantages we successfully attain in the embodiment hereinafter described, defined in the appended claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this application and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, of which:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a device, constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same with the front of the case removed and parts cut away, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same.
Although we have illustrated and hereinafter described but one form of the invention, we would not be understood as being limited to this specific construction, for various alterations and modifications may be made in the details of construction and arrangement of parts disclosed without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
Referring, now, to the illustrations, the superstructure of the device preferably consists of a casing, including a floor, 4, an upright rear wall, 5, and an inclined front wall, 6, having an intermediate opening, 7, through which the signs are revealed as will presently appear.
8 are the side walls of the casing, and within the lower portion of the casing and adjacent the said side walls are positioned sprocket or belt wheels, 9, carried by a shaft, 10, journaled in the side walls. The said wheels, 9, are connected, respectively, by
sprocket chains, 11, or belts, with small sprocket-wheels, or belt-wheels 12, positioned a distance above the wheels, 9, and rotatably supported by the walls, 8. The chains or belts, 11, are inter-connected by a transverse rod, 13. 14- are sign cards positioned between the chains and provided, a distance from their upper edges, with lateral studs, 15, preferably provided with heads, 16. 17 are rearwardly inclined rails, suitably mounted on the walls, 8, to engage the studs, 15, to normally support the cards and permit them to gravitate rearwardly, as will later be made more clear.
Adjacent their lower edges the cards are provided on their backs with hooks, 21. Be tween the rear leads of the chains, 11, extends a cross-member, 18, suitably suspended as by hangers, 19, which depend from the guide rails, 17, the said cross-member, 18, being so positioned that upon it ma Y rest the lower edge of the rearmost of the idle cards, 14, and the rear ends of the guide members, 17, are provided with suitable stops, 20, engageable by the studs, 15, to prevent displacement of the rear card.
On the backs of the cards, a short distance above their lower edge, are hooks, 21, so p0- sitioned that when the belts are driven in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 3, those of the rearmost of the idle cards will be engaged by the cross-member, 13, to carry such card upwardly to the position indicated at 14 forward tilting of the cards in this position being prevented by virtue of engagement of the studs, 15, behind the rear upright edges, 22 of guide-members, 23, suitably supported by the walls, 8.
Th front edges of the guide members, 23, are declined forwardly as at 24, and their upper end portions are curved rearwardly adjoining the rear edges, 22, at points, 25. As the rod, 13, approaches the highest point of its travel, the upper edge of the card fulcrums against the rear wall of the casing, and as the rod moves forwardly and downwardly as shown at 14 the studs, 15, pass over the points, 25, and slidably engage the front edges, 24, of the guides, 23. As the movement of the chains continues, the card is permitted to gravitate to the position in-. dicated at 14 in which position it is visible through the opening, 7, of the casing, and is supported by a cross-member, 26. As the card approaches this position, the studs, 15, slidably engage guide-members, 27 and finally ero em perils-A,
