To all whom it may aoncem:
Be' it known that I, WALTER ALLEN OBANNoN, a citizen of the United States and a resident of Tulsa, in the county of Tulsa and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packings for Pumps, of which "the following is a specification.
This invention: relates to a packing for pumps'and more particularly to pumps for use in oil or other'deep wells of the type in which the cylinder or travelling barrel moves with relation to the vplunger during the operation of the pump.
The object of the invention is to provide apacking adapted to be used-between the plunger and travelling barrel or a cylinder and sealing the same in ahighly efficient manner. 7
It is also an object'ofthe invention that the packing be adapted to be applied to different types of pumps in which the sameadvantages obtainable by the packing are desired.
It is also within the scope of the invention that the packing be extremely simple and inexpensive to apply.
Other objects relating to details of construction will hereinafter appear.
The invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings in which':

Referring to the drawings more particularly P indicates generally the plunger which is mounted within the traveling barrel or cylinder B. The plunger P carries upon its lower end a collar or enlargementlO which seats in the working barrel of the carry a.

The plunger consists in a hollow tubular member as shown and the constructioii' -ofwhich is well known and which passes through the headmember 12 in the lower end of the traveling barrel B. The' upper end of the plunger carries the main standing valve 13 and the u per end of the working barrel B carries t e check valve generally indicated by the reference charac ter 14- The construction heretofore described is of course well known to those having knowledge of the present art and although a certain type of construction is shown it is to be understood that the application of my invention is not to be so limited.
-As is well known the plunger P carries suitable packing below the upstanding valve 13 which may form a tight running fit with the running barrel B. This packing is the subject matter of the present invention and consists in what may be termed soft packing as generally indicatedby the reference character 15. This soft packing may be of felt lengths or it-may be of waste; In either instance the packing should be expandible so that if force is exerted the same will expand to form a tight fittin between the traveling barrel B and the p unger P. The

In operation of the pregent packing means when the travelling barrel B moves downwardly the packing 15 is pressed by the spring 19 so that it may form a ti ht fit with the travelling barrel B and upon t e upward stroke of the barrel the packing will be further. pressed by the" force of the liquid upon the movable. collar 16 and thus insure a tight fitting between the plunger P and travelling barrel B.
It should be noted that by the particular" construction and arrangement of packing I seat-ed, or it may be raised for repairing and again seated and in either case it will not damage the packing. Another advantage of this particular packing is that when a well'is not pumping continuously the sand and grit suspended in the column of fluid in the well tubing cannot settle back during a period when the pump is at rest and seriously abrade the packing when the pumping is resumed. This particular packing is so arranged that the only grit or sand which can settle on packing is that which is in suspension in the volume of fluid which is within the plunger itself at the time the pumping operation is suspended.
It also should be mentioned that in practise it is possible that the pump will be constructed with its standing valve in the lower part thereof, that is, below the packing. In such event a lock nut might be used upon the upper end of the plunger to replace the crown 13 for holding the collar 17 inposition. The lock nut should be constructed so that it would direct the sand away from the inner wall of'the tubing B.
I claim 1 In a pump of the character described, a movable reciprocating barrel having its lower end closed, a stationary plunger having an upper end portion disposed within said barrel and forming a close runnin fit therewith and having a portion beneat said upper end port-ion in spaced relation with the inner periphery of the barrel, an expansible packing surrounding the last named portion of the plunger, said packing being adapted to draw liquid through orifices in the lower end of the barrel upon downward movement of said barrel, and said liquid being ejected from said orifices under pressure upon upward movement of barrel, and means below said packing adapted to utilize the liquid pressure for compressing said packing during the last named movement of said barrel.
In combination, a pump of the character described, a movable reciprocating barrel having its lower end closed, a stationary plunger having an upper end portion disposed within said barrel and forming a close running fit therewith and having a portion beneath said upper end portion which is in spaced relation with the inner periphery of the barrel, an expansible packing surrounding the last named portion of the plunger, a follower upon said plunger beneath said barrel, said plunger being adapted to draw liquid through orifices in the lower end ofthe barrel upon downward movement of said barrel with relation to the plunger, and said liquid being adapted to be ejected from said orifices and also compress the follower for pressing the expansible packing upon upward movement of said barrel for the purpose described.
3. In combination, a pump of the character described, a movable reciprocating barrel having its lower end closed, a stationary plunger having an upper end portion disposed within said barrel and forming a close running fit therewith and having a portion beneath said upper end portion which is in spaced relation with the inner periphery of the barrel, an expansible packing surrounding the last named portion of the plunger, a spring-pressed follower carried by the plunger and disposed beneath said expansible packlng, said follower being adapted to maintain expansible packing in proper position upon the plunger, and said plunger being adapted to draw liquid through orifices in the lower end portion of said barrel upon the downward stroke of the barrel and said liquidbeing adapted to be ejected through said orifices and also press upwardly upon said follower during the upward stroke of said barrel with relation to said stationary plunger for the purpose described.
