CONVERTIBLE WATCH.

Be it known that I, SAMUEL Lorin, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of. New York, have invented certain new and use tul Imp roven'ients in Convertible Watches, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in watches, and with respect to its more specific features, to watches adapted to be worn in a plurality of positions.

An object of the present invention is to provide a device of the class described, which may be used interchangeably as a finger ring or as the clasp of abracelet.

A further object is to provide a ring wherein the hoop is hinged to the bezel to swing at anangle to the plane thereof, or in substantial parallelism therewith.

A further object is to pro ide a ring ineluding bezel and a hoop, wherein the hoop is composedof similar are shaped sections cooperating to form with the bezel an annulus, and hinged to swing away from each other into substantial parallelism with the plane of the bezel to provide loops for connection with a strap or the like to form a bracelet.

A :t'urther object is to provide a device including bezel in the form of a case provided with loops for engagement by the ends of strap or the like to support the bezel atthe wrist or ankle, and arranged to be converted with the bezel as a part'thereof, into an annulus for encircling the finger.

A further object is to provide a device including a watch, having mechanism in connection with the case for permitting the watch to be worn on the wrist with the usual bracelet, or on the finger as a finger ring.

A. further object is to provide a linger ring having a watch for a bezel, wherein the ring is composed of the watch case and a hoop hinged thereto.

Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.

The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction herein- Serial No. 588,770.

In the present embodiment of the invention the improved watch includes a case 1, which in the present instance is of oval formation, and the case forms the bezel oi a ring, constituted by the said bezel and a hoop member which is hinged to the bezel. The hoop member in the present instance consists of similar sections 2, each of which is are shaped, and their adjacent faces are flat to it smoothly together, the outer faces being rounded or otherwise shaped. in accordance with the form of the hoop desired. The ends of the members 2 are flat shown at 3, and provided with openings, which engage loops 4 on the back of the case 1, the said loops constituting a hinge connection between the hoop sections and the case.

Referring to Figure 3 it will be noticed that the back the case is slightly convex as shown at .5, on an arc of the same circle on which the hoop sections 52 are formed, and the case and the hoop sections form a complete ring, which may be made of any desired size. The loops i are so arranged, that the hoop sections 2 may swing away from each other, into substantiall the same plane, and into substantial parallelism with the plane of the case. When in this position, a suitable strap indicated at 6 may be run through the hoop sections, which then act as loops for receiving the strap, to permit the watch to be worn as a wrist watch, the strap being secured about the wrist in the usual manner.

While the improvement is shown with a watch at the bezel, any desired character of bezel may be used instead, as for instance signet, or a set of any desired character, the bezel serving as a set holder. The arrangement of the hoop, which may if desired be a unitary structure instead of sectional, permits the ring to be used interchangeably as a bracelet or ring, and in addition the arrangement assists in the holding of the ring on the finger. If for instance the bezel tends to move off the finger, that part of the hoop attached to the bezel moves therewith, while that part which is remote from the bezel tends to cling to the finger, throwing the plane of the hoo at an acute angle to the bezel, and causing the ring to grip the finger more tightly. The hinged arrangement does not however, offer any impediment to the placing of the ring on the finger, since the hoop may be held with its plane at right angles to the plane of the bezel during the placing of the ring. If for instance, when the device is worn as a bracelet, the strap should break, or fail to function for any reason, it may be removed, and the device may then be worn as a finger ring until the strap can be repaired or replaced.

As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope of the invention, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

It is also to be understood that the language used in the following claims is intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described, and all statements of the scope of the invention which, as a mater of language, might be said to fall therebetween.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a device of the class described, in combination, a bezel, and a two part hoop hinged to the bezel, the parts of the hoop being mounted to swing into contact throughout their adjacent faces when at substantially a right angle to the plane of the bezel, or away from each other into substantially the same plane.

2. In a device of the class described, in combination, a ring having a watch for a bezel and a hoop hinged to the case of the watch, the hoop consisting of similar sections arranged to swing toward each other into substantial contact throughout their adjacent faces and from each other to form with the watch case an annulus, or to form loops extending in opposite directions for engagement by a holding strap.

In a device of the class described, in combination, a watch comprising a case having hoop members hinged thereto to swing on an axis substantially diametrical to the case, and mounted to swing into substantially the same plane to form loops for engagement by a holding strap to support the watch on the wrist, or to swing into contact substantially throughout the extent of their adjacent faces to form with the watch case an annulus.

In a device of the class described, in

combination, a ring including a haze] in the form of a case, and a hoop composed of similar sections both hinged to the case to swing toward and from each other into contact substantially throughout the extent of their adjacent faces, or into substantial parallelism with the Plane of the case.

5. A ring including a watch for a bezel, and a hoop hinged to the watch, the hoop being composed of similar sections, each hinged to the back of the watch transversely thereof and alongside the other section, so that when the sections are swung together, they will contact throughout their adjacent faces, the inner face or back of the watch being concave on an arc whose center is that of the hoop.
