Application led June 20, 3921, Serial No. 1-78,843. Renewed Merch 3T., 1923.
Re it known that I, AUGUSTUS M. Harten, itizen ot' the Unitedv States, residing at `V`:oose Creekj in the county of Harris and "tate oit Texas, have invented certain neu7 .amd useful Improvement in Tongs, of which the following is a speeioation.
This inventionrelates to new and useful improvements in a tong.
@ne object of the invention is to provide a tong which is specially adapted for use in handling pipe, rods and the like and is particularly useiul in screwing` together and unscrerving joints of pipe.
Another object is to provide a tong` which may he readily adjusted to pipes and reds et different sizes. Viith theA above and other objects in View the invention has particular relation to certain novel features oi' construction7 operation and arrangement of parts7 an example ot' which is given in this specification and illustrated in the accomi panying drawings, Wherein:-
Figure l shows a plan View oi a rotary, showing the tong applied to a drill stern7 and Working in cri-operation with a backup post. for the purpose of screwing together and unscreuing the joints ot a drill stem.
Fig'. 2 shows a side View thereof. vlw'. 3 an edge View et' the tong.
Y el. is a side vien' thereof, partially in section, and
Fig. 5 is a cross sectional'vicw taken on the line ot' Fig'. il. In the drawings the nunieral l designates the rotary` tahle7 which is mounted on the hase 2 rhe numeral 3 designates the drill stein which is driven hy the rotary. The numeral. 4 des ignates a stationaijY tong which is held in lined position by a post 5 which upstands from the hase 2. This tong 1l is applied to joint ot the drill stem to hold it against turning. Upstanding from the table l is a post 6 which rotates the tong 7. This tong secured to the joint ofthe stein to he l in screwing; together or unserewing i 'nts ol? the stern.Y The tons.;` 7 is of special construction which now he deserihed. rhis tong); includes s handle 8 which has a. square hearing in whiih the shank 9 of the slidahle jaw l0 slides. This is arcuate and toothed. The inner end of the shank 9 has a swivel-v ling; connection With the actuating rod ll which is threaded through said handle. The outer end of the rod .ll has an eye l2 provided to receive a handle hy means of Which the rod maj,r he turned to adjust the jaw l0. Piroted t0 the handle 8 there is a hook i3 havinpT the removable, arcuate, toothed opposing` the slidahle aw l0. l
The tong is .applied t0 the pipe as shown in l1 igures l and 2 and the rod turned to clamp the awe on` opposite sides of the pipe and by manipulating the tong;` the joint oi pipe to which it applied may he turned.
l'lvlhat l claim is fr tong including a handle formed with a square socket in one end, a jaw having a square shanlr which has a sliding hearingr in said socket, a rod threaded through the other end ot' said handle and having a swivelins connection With said shankv in said socket to adjus sainelengthwise;I a hook pivote/o to the handle. in epposition to said jam' and a detachable toothed arcuate jaw` seid hook and opposing` the slidahle and means ttor securing said attachment jaw in position in said hook.
