IMPROVEMENT IN UMBRELLA-SUPPORTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,408, dated December 9, 1873; application filed May 31, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. DROWN, Jr., of the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a (Jonnecting Device for Phaeton Umbrellas, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to enable a phaeton umbrella to be readily connected to and disconnected from its supportingarm; and this object I attain by the use of the connecting device illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawing, which consists of a stem, A, secured to or forming part of the tip of the umbrella, and having pivoted to it, at a, a plate, B,which, after having been adjusted to the position shown in Fig. 1, and passed, with the stem, through the eye b at the outer end of the supportingarm D, is turned to the position shown in Fig. 2, it then resting upon the top of the arm, where itis retained by the weight of the umbrella, thus effectually preventing the withdrawal of the stem, and
forming a secure connection.
To disconnect the umbrella, it is simply necessary to elevate the same and the stem to a snfficient extent to enable the pivoted retaining-plate to be turned to a position in line with the said stem, after which it can be drawn downward through the eye in the supportingarm without obstruction.
The device in its simplest form, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, is applicable particularly to the support of parasols above childrens carriages; but for the support of the large-sized umbrellas which are commonly used as a covering for pony-phaetons I prefer to employ the modified form of the device illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4, where it will be obv gitudinal movement by a shoulder, c, of the stem which bears against the under side of the said arm, and by the plate B at the upper side of the same. Owing to this longitudinal retention of the stem the plate B cannot be simply turned upon its-pivot in order to bring it into line within the stem when the latter has to be withdrawn, but must be slotted, as shown in Fig. 4, so that it may be first drawn back, and then turned.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination of an umbrella tip or stem, A, carrying a pivoted plate, B, with a supporting-arm, D, having an eye, I), through which the said stem and plate can be passed, as set forth.
2. The stem A, having a shoulder, c, and a jointed slotted plate, B, and adapted to a notched arm, D, substantially as specified.
