BIL ET HOLDER roe sPoKE-MnrEaINe MACHINES,
-A1ip1ication filed October 4, 1921.' SerialN'o. 505,246. I
T all whom it may concern.
Be it known that-I, HENRY FLroK, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at the city and county of Jackson, State of Michigan, have'invented certain new and useful'lmprovements in Billet Holders for Spoke- Mitering Machines, of'which the following is a specification.
This invention relates" to improvements in billet holders for spoke miteri'ng machines. I
The objects of the invention are:
First. to provide an improved automatic billet holder for a spoke mitering machine. Second, 'to provide a billet holder which will automatically force the trued side, bottom and end of a billet to position to insure uniformity of dimensions of the billets be- 'ing m'ade. 1
Further objects, and objects relating to details and economies of construction and operation will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow. r
' The objects of the invention are accom plished by thedevicesand means described inthe following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claimsj I I I A structure which is a preferred embodiment of the invention is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a art of this application, in which: 1 Fig. I is a perspective view of a spoke miterinr machine with the improved automatic billet holder in position, a portion of the frame and gearing being broken away.
Fig. II is an'enlarged detail plan viewof the billet holder and associated parts on the work table of the machine. I
Fig. III is an enlarged detail elevation view of the billet holderfr'om the front of the machine and from the front of Fig. 11.
FigDIV is' an enlarged detail sectional view on line i-4: of Fig. 11.
Fig. V is a detail view of a billet in the rough.
Fig. VI is a detail view of the billet after the spoke miter has been out.
In the drawings similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Considering the drawings, the spoke mitering machine illustrated in Fig. I is similar to that appearing in the patent to able let 2 Scherer, #1,263,127,' dated April 16, 1918, which patent is owned by the Hayes Wheel Company, to which reference is made for detailed description of the main parts.
Considering the numbered parts ofthe drawings by their numbers, 1 is the main frame of the machine; 2 is the reciprocating knife head carrying the beveled cutter knives 2. This head is reciprocated by the pitman 3 on the wrist in-4 on the faceplate 5. The machine is drivenfrom the pulley 6 through trainof gears 7.
The billet support 8 is on the work table 10 and is provided with an upwardly projecting stopv 9 at its inner end, these parts being carried on the adjustable workjtabl e 1110 which is adjustable by hand-screws 10.
A fixed jaw 11 is secured by cap screw 11 to slide 11. The slide is adjustablelby set controlled by the set screws 13, 14c,see
Fig. II.-
A movable jaw -15-is secured by cap screw v 15 exactly similar to the capscrew' 11 to the slide 17 having projections 17, set
screws 18, 18 being provided to adjustand 17. A pull rod 21 connects to the said bent lever and is connected to the arm 22 of the actuating rock shaft 23 disposed beneath upon the base of the machine. When this rock shaft is operated it will force the 'movrock shaft 24 is' piv o ted in bearings 25, 25 and an upwardly projecting arm 26 is disposed to act upon the end of the billet 27 and force it against the stop 9. This rock shaft is actuated by the pull rod 28 acting on the rock shaft arm 30, a compression spring 30' being interposed so that the connection is yielding. The lower end of the pull rod 28 is connected to the arm 29 carried by the rock shaft 23,-see Fig. I. The rock shaft 23 has arm 35 to which the automatic actuating means is connected. This comprises a cam 31 on the driving plate 5 acting upon the cam follower roller jaw 15 into contact with the spoke bil- :screw 12 and the angle of the'fixedj'aw is 33 carried by the bent lever 32, which is connected by rod 34 to the said rock shaft arm 35, atcompensating spring 136* being interposed to accommodate inequalities in the size of the billets.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to secure 'by Letters Patent, is
1. In a spoke rnitering machine, the combination, with a table vand reciprocating mitering knives with driving disk, wrist pin and pitman therefor, of a spoke billet support with an upwardly projecting end stop at its inner end, a clamping finger to force the billet endwise a ainst the end stop,
a rock shaft carrying said finger with yielding connection meansto actuate the same, a stationary aw at one side of said support,
amovable jaw to cooperate therewith, a bent :lever with connections for operating said -movable jawtimed to actafter the operation of said clamping finger, an actuating rock shaft with connecting rods to thesaid arts a cam on the drivin disk of said lmives, and a lever with a cam follower timed tobe actuated by the saidcam connectedto operate to clamp the-billet in place in advance'of the cut of the knife, coacting as specified.
2. In a spoke m'itering machine; the combination with a 7 table and reciprocating Initering *knives with driving disk, wrist pin and pitman therefor, of a spoke billet support with an upwardly projecting end stop at its inner end, a stationary jaw-at one side of said support, a 'movable' jaw to cooperate therewith, a bent lever-with connections for operating said movable jaw, a cam on the driving disk of said knives,
and a lever witha cam follower timed to be actuated by the said cam connected-to 0perate toclamp the billet inplace inadvance of the cut of the knife, coacting asspecified.
3. In -a spoke mitering machine, the combination with a table and reciprocating mitering knives with drivingdislgwrist pin and pitman therefor, of a spoke billet support, a-"stationary jaw at one sidevof said support, a movable jaw to c0operatetherewith, a bent/lever with connections for operating said movable jaw, a cam on the driving disk of said knives, and a lever I with a cam follower timed to be actuated by nthesaid cam connected to operate to lever with connections for operating said movable jaw timed to act afterwthe operation of said clamping fingeijan actuating" rock shaft with connecting rods :to the said parts, and means connected tofoperate to clamp the billet in place .inadvance :of the I cut of the; knife, coacting as' specified.
5. In a spoke mitering machine, the combination with a table and reciprocating mitering knives with driving disk, :i-wrist pin and pitman therefor, ofa spoke billet support with an upwardly'projectingpnd stop at its-inner end, a clamping finger to force the. billet endwise fagainst the end stop,'a rock'shaft carrying said finger with yieldin'gconnection means to actuate the same, a stationary jaw at one sideof said support, a movablehjaw to cooperate therewith, a bent lever with connections for: opera-ting said movable j aw timed to act after the operation of" said clamping 'finger, an actuating rock shaft with connecting rods clamp the billet in place, fied. e
6. In a spoke mitering machine, the "combination with a table and reciprocating mitering knives with driving disk, wrist pin and pitman therefor,of abil'letsupport with an upwardly projecting en'd stop; at" its inner end, astationary jaw at'ones'ide ofsaid support, amovable jaw to cooperatetherecoacting as speciwith, a bent lever with connections for operating said movable jaw, an actuating rock shaft with connecting rods to the said parts to actuate the same and clamp the billet in place, coacting asspecified.
In witness-whereof, I have-hereuntoset my hand and seal.
