This invention is a mechanical device for causing a flag to wave, or to appear to wave, and is intended to be used for advertising purposes or to attract attention or under other conditions where an apparently waving flag is desired.
lThe movement of the iiag is produced by a mechanical Contrivance. enclosed within a casing suchas might be made by sewing the edges of two flags' together, the mechanical parts being operated by a motor and connections from the motor extending through the iag staff.`
The invention will be more fully understood by reference to the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the apparatus.l Fig. 2' is a similar view, partly in section, the mechanical structure within the flag beingl exposed. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Figs. 4 and 5 are similar views with the part-s in different positions. Fig. 6 is a detail of the parts within the Hag. Fig. 7 is a section on the line 7-7 n of rig. 2.
rlhe flag, which is indicated at 8 in the drawings, conveniently consists of two flags sewed together at their upper, lower and outer edges, forming a casing which is open at its inner end so 'that it can be slipped over the hinged arms 11 and the supporting wires 12 as illustrated in Figs. 2, 3 and .4. The open end of the flag casing, is provided with snap buttons 9 by means of which those ends are fastened to the staff 18, so that the operating mechanism is concealed wit-hin the flag casing.
. This operating mechanism comprises a series of double hinged arms 11, comprising pairs of parallel plates which are hinged together at their ends as indicated at 11aand 11b. It will be noted that the hinges 11a are attached to the meeting ends of the plates, on the outer sides, while the. hinges 11b are fastened internally or between the plates, one leaf of each of said hinges being fastened to the inside of one plate and the other leaf to the inside of the next oppo- `bracket gives the reverse movement.

A bell crank lever 16 is ulcrumed at 16a on the brace 14 and one arm thereof. is con'- nected by a link 15 to one of the rear arms 11, and the other arm of the bell crank lever projects through a slot in the'hollow flag staff/18 and is connected by a wire 17 and eye 19 to a crank 27 on a gear 26 which meshes with a pinion 25 geared by a gear wheel 24 to a gear 23 on the shaft of an electric motor 22, the gears being supported by la plate 28 fastened to the base 21, the
constructions being such that as the motor shaft turns it will pull down on the wire 17 and rock the bell crank 16. In operation, the motor will as stated revolve the crank 27 which pulls down on the wirel 17 and rocks the bell crank 16 which,
by its connection to the arms 11 will swing said arms on their hinges and so cause them to bend or retract, and on thereverse motion the arms are swung in the opposite direction, causing the elongation or extension of the same and the flag carried thereby'.V
This gives the appearance of the waving ries of arms hinged together, a flag supported thereon, said flag having'two opposite flexible sides between which the arms are enclosed, and means to swing said'arms on their hinges.
'2. A flag waving device comprising a se` ries of pairs of arms connected in parallel relation by hinges at their ends, a flag supported on said arms, and means attached to one pair of arms to swing the same, and means to communicate the motion ol' said pair to the other pairs successively.
3. A liag waving device comprising a flexible llag casing, a stall to which 1t is attached, a series of hinged arms supported on the staff and enclosed within the casing, and means extending through the staff and connected to said arms to swing the latter on their hinges.
4. The combination ofa hollow iag stall, a flexible flag casing attached thereto, a series of hinged arms supported on the staff and projecting outwardly within the casing, and means extending through the staff and connected to said arms to swing the same on their hinges.
5. The combination oi a hollow `flag Staff, a. flexible flag casing attached thereto, a series of hinged arms supported on the stall and projecting outwardly within the casing7 and means extending through the staliO and connected to said arms to swing the same on their hinges, and means carried by said arms to distend the lag casing.
6.
