Description
C. W. SALADEE.
Railway-Cars.
WITNESSESI NITED STATES PATENT FFIGE,
CYRUS YV. SALADEE, F PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN RAILWAY-CARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,365, dated December 9, 1873; application tiled November-"21, 1873.
CASE B.
To all whom t may concern Y Be it known that I, OYRUs W. SALADEE, of Pittsburg, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Railway- Cars, of which the following' is a specification embodying my invention:
My invention consists in providing, within the body of the car, a spring or movable bottom secured to suitable hangers, which are suspended from springs supported at suitable points above the bottom or lower frame-work of the body, said mo able or spring ottom being provided with appropriate sides to prevent contact of the freight, or load carried thereon, with the sides and ends of the carbody proper, and has for its object the relief of the cars, as well as the road, of much ofthe violence and strain now imposed upon both alike, consequent upon the extreme rigidity ot' the arrangement of springs with car-bodies having a solid bottom.
In the drawings, Figure l is a plan view of a freight-car body with the roof ot' the car removed; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation ot' the same with the near side of the car-body removed', the better to show the internal arrangement and construction of the movable bottom and its connections.
The general construction of the car-body is in all respects the same as any ot' the wellknown forms now in vogue, with the eXcep tion of the bottom, which, in this case, is made independent of the body, and is suspended Within the frame-work ofthe body by hangers L, connected to springs I, (of any suitable form,) placed on each side of the body at or near the top of the car, as clearly shown in the drawings; and to relieve this swinging spring-bottom from sudden end jar, corner springs S (see Figzl) are interposed, as shown. This bottom B B is also provided with side and end guards P, to prevent contact of the load carried thereon with the sides and end of the body while in motion. A passageway is left through each side ot the guards P, corresponding to the width of the doors in the sides of the body, and the same is closed by means of movable bars O. I
I claim as my invention, as au improvement in freight-cars- The independent bottom B B', provided with guards P, and supported upon hangers L, suspended from springs placed above the bottom and secured to the outer body A, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
OYRUS W. SALADEE.
Vitnesses HERM. LAUTEN, Louis KRAFFT.
