Description

J. ANDERSON.
Trussed'Spring-Bolsters for Railroad Cars.
Patented August 12, 1873 W wd l,%
WITNESSES AM PHOTO-LITHOBHAPHIC C0 N X g DS'BURHEIS PROCESS) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES ANDERSON, OF WILMINGTON, N. (1., ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO W. J. OALAIS AND WM. H. JAMES, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN TRUSSED-SPRING BOLSTERS FOR RAILROAD CARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,618, dated August 12, 1873; application filed May 1, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES ANDERSON, of Wilmington, North Carolina, have invented an Improved Trussed-Spring Bolster for Railroad Cars, of which the following is a specification: 7
The object of my invention is to diminish the vibration of railroad cars in motion, and to. give additional strength to the frame of the car by transferring the bearing at the point of support from the center to two points near the side sills of the car, thus giving greater safety and comfort to passengers.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 shows plan of one end of frame of car-bottom. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on the line L L. Fig. 4 is a cross-section on the line K K. Fig. 5 is a cross-section on the line G G. Fig. 6 is a cross-section on the line I I. Fig. 3 is an isometrical view of springs, spring-seat, and stirrup.
1n the drawing the several figures show the trussed body-bolster B,-with its truss-rods r i r stretched toproper tension over bearing 8 by means of nuts k k. The cast-iron springseats 9 g are jogged into sides of bolster B.
The tops of spring-seats g g are recessed to receive rubber springs A A, which bear upv against top of iron stirrups f f, and are kept in place at top by the pins 0 0. The flanged guides at ends of spring-seats g 9 can be extended above as well as below, giving a better draft-hold against side of transoms 0 O, and to receive the weight of the car in case of a spring being broken. The stirrups ff are jogged into the inner sides of transoms O 0, their flanges m m secured by bolts to the bottom of transonis G O to receive the bearingstrain. 19 is the center pin. h h are side bearings; mt,safety-hangers; 0, center plate. The top of transonis G G can be connected and steadied by flat iron plates, if. desirable.
I claim as my invention In combination with the trussed-spring carbody bolster B, the springs A, or their equivalents, the spring-seats g, and stirrups f, as and for the purpose set forth.
JAMES ANDERSON.
