TASSEL AND PENDANT.
Application filed September 28, 1920. Serial No. 413,398.
To aZZ ti; 710m it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH E. CHAPPATTE, citizen of the United States, residing at Narberth, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tassels and Pendants, of which the following is a specification.
Prior to my present invention, decorative tassels and pendants, such for example as are used on curtains, draperies and window shades, etc., have been made with various ornamental coverings; These coverings are usually made by first winding threads of silk yarn upon wooden forms so as to completely cover the wood after which silk cord is netted over the wound yarn before the fringe is attached. This previous meth 0d of making tassels and pendants requires great skill since most of the work is done by hand and said netting must be done by hand and shaped to the various contours of the forms. Sometimes a number of forms are individually covered and secured together by various means so as to produce different designs of tassel heads or pendants and furthermore the construction is expensive and it is difficult to secure persons who are capable and willing to undertake such tedious tasks.
One object of my present invention is to quickly and cheaply produce tassels and pendants for the above mentioned purpose which willv present substantially the same effect to the eye as tassels and pendants made in accordance with that above described; my present invention consisting primarily in molding or otherwise producing the tassels and pendants in a manner so that the outer surface will'include an integral structure representative of wound and netted cords or threads which will have an appearance similar to the separately covered tassel heads and pendants above mentioned.
Another object is to make my improved tassel heads and pendants in such manner that bullion or other styles of fringe can be secured thereto in such manner that the resulting structure will be durable and extremely pleasing in appearance.
These objects, and other advantageous ends which will be described hereinafter, I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is an elevation showing a tassel Figure 3 is a transverse section taken on 4 the line 33 of Figure 2, v
Figure 4 is a sectional elevationthrough the completed tassel; a part ofthe fringe being cut off at the bottom,
Figure 5 is an elevation showing another I 7 form of tassel made in accordance with my present lnvention,
Figure 6 1S a transverse section taken on the line 6+6 of Figure 5, and
Figure 7 is a longitudinal section of the tassel head illustrated in Figures 5 and-6.
In making a tassel or pendant in accordance with my present invention, I may use any material which may be molded or pressed into form so that after the molding or pressing operation, the material will harden or set. For example I may use celluloid, plastic compositions or any other material which can be molded by pouring or pressing the same into shape'and if desired thematerial may be tinted by painting, dyeing or otherwise coloring the same to produce various effects; said coloring either being present inthe molding or pressing operation or it may be applied after the tassel head or pendant is formed and hardened.
Referring to the drawings and particularly to Figures 1 to 4 inclusive, I make my improved tassel head 8, one form of which is shown in Figure 1, by providing a mold 9 which is made in two sections 10 and 11 as shown in Figures 2 and 3. This mold is made to provide a cavity 12 which leads downwardly from its top 13 and terminates in a closed bottom as shown at 14;. The surface of thecavity 12 is cut out to provide grooves 15 of such shape that when material, out of which the head is to be made, is poured into the cavity that said material will fill said grooves and after the material has set or hardened and the sections 9 and 10 of the mold have been opened to permit the release of the head that the portion of the material which entered the grooves 15 will be in the form of projections 16 representing a netted covering for the body portion 17 of the tassel top. In other words the grooves 15 are cut or otherwise formed in such manner within the mold sections that they will shape the material in the form of intertwined or, netted. threads which while they are integral with the body portion 7, will give the appearance of threads or cords which have been netted around the body portion 17. Furthermore the inner surface of the cavity 12, as shown in Figures 2 and 3, has been shaped to provide a portion 18 having the representation of a band or ring surrounding the body portion 17 between its ends; there being present a portion 19 having the appearance of individual windings of'thread or yarn.
It it thus obvious that by cutting or other wise forming the inner surface of the cavity 12 that the molded material therein can be given various effects representing threads or yarn which covers the body portion and by tinting either integrally or superficially the, molded structure may be given a very pleasing appearance so as to represent a covering of yarn and netted cords such for example as illustrated in Figure 1. In order to provide means of attachment of fringe 20- to the head 8, I insert a convex filling piece 21 in the bottom of the cavity 12 and insert a core rod 22 upwardly through the filling piece and. cavity 12 so that the resulting molded structure, as clearly shown in Figure t, will have a recess 23 in its bottom and a central hole 24 leading upwardly from 1i 1e recess to the top of the head whereby attachment. cord can beinserted; said attachment cord extending through a button 26 and being knotted. at 2% below the bottom and at 28 above the top of the head 8. The fringe 20 may be formed of any of the type having a heading which can be wound around the attachment cord directly above the button 26 after which the attachment cord can be pulled upwardly to firmly clamp the heading of the fringe within the recess and the knot 28 can then be formed so as to hold all of the partsin place. If desired the upper surface 27 of the recess 23 can be coated with adhesive material so as to-guard against any possible slipping'of the fringe out" of the recess and in this manner a strong" and durable tassel can be produced; the heading of the fringe not being visible since only the strands of the fringe will depend below the head 8 as clearly shown in Figure 1.
In Figures 5, 6 and 7 I have illustrated another type of design. in which the molded head 8 has the appearance of wavy cords which. are wound around a body portion and since the other parts are similar to that described in connection with Figures 1 to 4, l have given similar parts corresponding reference numerals.
While I have described my invention as taking a particular form, it will be understood that the various parts of my invention may be changed without departing from the spirit thereof and hence I 'do not limit myself to the precise construction set forti but consider that I am at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters latent is 1. An ornamental tassel block of plastie material having upon its outer surface an integral design in relief.
2. An ornamental tassel block of plastic material having upon its outer surface an integral design in relief representative of fabric.
8. An ornamental tassel block of plastic material having upon its outer surface an integral design representative of a ring.
4. An ornamental tassel block of plastic material having upon its outer surface an integral design in relief representative of fabric and a design representative of a ring.
An. ornamentalv tassel block of plastic material having upon its outer surface an integral design. in relief representative of fabric and provided with a central bore adapted to receive a suspending cord and with a concavity at its bottom adapted to receive a fringe.
In tesiimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presenceof two subscribing" witnesses.
JOSEPH E. GHAPPATTE.
