Application filed March 19, 1920. Eerial 110. 361074.
'0 all whom. it may concern. 1
Be it known that 1 lWAn'riu-r 1 V. Dawson, a citizen of the United titates, and residentof Bulii'alo, nae County, State of New York. have invented certain no r and useful 11nproveinents in Wheels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement 1 in wire wheels and particularly to locking means for use therewith.
One object oi this invention isto provide a detachable wheel with a plurality otzloeln inn means which operate dissiniultaneously.
Another object oft this invention to increase the number oi locking positions of a hub cap without changing the fastening ineanstorinerly employed.
Other objects will. appear from an enamination of the specification and drawing which forms part thereof and in whicln Fig. 1 is a transverse section and r Fig. 2 is a section 'talrenalongthe line 2. Referring to the drawings, 10 and 11 designate the inner hub and hub shell re spectively of a detachable wheel. The hub shell 11 is held in position by a hub cap 12 which is threaded on to the inner hub 10 and bears at its periphery against the hub shell. Mounted in grooves 13 and 141 on the inner face of the hub cap are looking bars 15 and 16 which, as shown, are adapted to engage the hub shell in a manner to be described later. in the outer face of the hub cap 1s provided a wrench rcceivlng groove 171nto which one end of each. locking bar projects so that the bars will be retracted when the wrench is lnserted 1n the groove. This construction is fully disclosed in Patent No.
till 1,32%,513 to George E. ldolynea 1-; and since it forms no part of this invention no further description is believed necessary.
The outer ends of the bars are provided with lock- engaging portions 18 and 19 which extend through openings 20 and 21 in the side of the hub cap. a which pass through holes in the bars 15 and 16 respectively act to hold the portions 18 and 19 in operative position.
Mounted in the mouth of the hub shell 11 is a locking ring 24 which is provided with a plurality of equallyspaced slots The portions 18 and 19 undertheIinfluence 1 claim and desire to secure by Letters Pat- Fdprings 22 and 23 i 26 between the slots 25 must take the strain should there be any tendency to loosen the hub cap. For that reason the divisions are made of appreciable width, and it is not pos sible to tighten the a small amount although it is desirable to have the shell held firmly in place on the inner hub.
This result might be obtained by increasing number of slots inthe ring; 241; but this would mean reducing the width of the divisions 2-6 and necessarilyweakening them. l have, however. increased the number of locked positions 1 without weakening the locking by the following means: the look ing' bars 15 and 16 are so arranged that the portions 18 and 19 enter the slots E25 dis- 1 simultaneously thus doubling); the number of without.departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
Havlng thus described my lnvention, what ent is 2- to 1. in a wheel, the coni1b1nat1on with an 1nner hub of a hubshell mounted thereon, a.
hub cap on saidhub and bearing against said hub shell to holdit on said hub, a locking ring hired in the mouth of said hub shell 1 and provided with a series of equally spaced slots, the division between said slots being Of substantially thesaine width as the slots,
a plurality 01 looking; bars mounted in said.
hub cap and normally tending; to reciprocate radially therein into engagement with the slots in said ring to lock positively the cap against lootenina said bars being so located that when one is in engagement with a slot in the locking ring; another rests against a division in the ring.
2. In a wheel. the combination with an inner huh ota hub shell mounted thereon, a hub cap onsaid hub and bearing against said hub shell to holdit on said hub, a locking ring fixed in the mouth of said hub shell and provided with a series of equally spaced slots, the division between said slots being of substantiallythe same Width as the slots, at
looking bar mounted in said hub cap and normally tending to reciprocate radially there- 111 to engage a slot 111 said rlng, and the engaging portion 01 said bar being beveled on one side so that the bar when in the slot positively prevents loosening of the hub cap under all conditions of the wheel but permits tightening and a second locking,- bar inountetlto reciprocate radially in said hub VAL 111R \V.
