Be it known that T, Aramaic D. PURTLE, a citizen ot the United States, residing at Marietta, in the county of Washington and State of Uhio, have invented a new and useto] Brass-Liner Stuffing-Box Head, of which th following is a specification.
This invention relates to pump construe m tions, and more particularly to brass liner stufiing box heads, it being the primary object of the invention to provide novel means for insuring a fluid-tight connection between the head and liner to eliminate wasting of the oil during the pumping operation.
A further object of the invention is to provide-a one-piece head-presenting a single packing point thereby reducing the packingnecessary to a minimum.
With the foregoing provide a fluid-tight joint, to
and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the com bination and arrangementof parts and in.
the details ot-construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the inven-tion'herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing .t'rom the spirit ofth invention. Referring to the drawinga- Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a stuffing box head constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 'i 2-2 of Figure l.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 designates the stuffing box head which is provided with a lateral opening to accommodate the screw 6 that contacts with the polishedrod 7 of the pump construction for securing the polished rod in predetermined positions of adjustment.
The head '5 is provided with an opening r extending from the lower end thereof into 0 the body portiomterminating at a point substantially intermediate the ends of the head, the opening being for the purpose of accommodating the packing 8 and the upper end of the liner tube 9 in which the'polishedrod 7 is positioned.
As shown, the upper end of the liner tube 9 is flared outwardly as at 10 providing a.
is threaded to accommodate the threads of.
the follower 11 which, when the same is positioned within the opening of the head, forces the packing 8 into close engagement with the walls of the opening and the flared portion 10 of the tube 9.
1* rom the foregoing it will be seen that due to the construction as described, a fluid-tight connection between the polished rod 7 and the liner tube is provided at all times. In assembling a structure of this character, the head 5 is properly positioned on the rod 7, whereupon packing is positioned within the opening of the head. The liner tube is now brought to a position where the flared extremity thereof contacts with the packing, and the packing is further positioned within the opening to contact with the opposite side of the flange 10. The follower 11 is now po sitioned within the opening and rotated to force'the packing into close engegement with the elements of the device.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:-
A stufling box head having an opening formed therein, a polished rod operating through the opening, a liner tube embracing a portion of the polished rod and having one end thereof disposed within the opening, packing material within the opening disposed around the rod and contacting thcrcwith, the packing material being positioned above the liner, means formed at the upper end of the liner tube and embedded in the packing material for restricting movement of the liner tube withrcspect to the polished rod, packing material positioned below the upper end of the liner and contacting thcrcwith. and means for securing the packing Within the head.
In testimony that-fit claim the foregoing as my own. I have hereto ailixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
